Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have just made my first tweet, in order to urge people to vote on Election Day.
I am a Twitter newbie and have no followers.

Trump's already flinging "Socialist!"
Have you not had the missfortune to see his adds? He has been doing that for weeks, literaly all his adds flat out say "President Trump is the only thing standing between Amercia and Socalisim, and that if you dont vote for him iillegal imigrants will take your job"
Like there not dog whistling it, there not implying it, there not saying other things that mean it.... they are using those exact fucking words, all of them.
So a tie is a good thing- Trump has no chance of winning the popular vote without solid debate victories, which this was not. And with the popular vote off the table, Trump's already bleak chances of victory get cut in half.
Trump's playing to militias and refusing the respect the result are more concerning, but if you ask me, they have a small chance of mattering in the long term- the Republicans aren't behind him on that count, so at worst he can make a mess of things for a few months before the situation sorts itself out.
I'm glad I missed the debates (the first I missed since 2008). They sounded like a crap show, but at least it sounds like Biden won. According to CBS, Viewers favored Biden over Trump 48%-41%, with 10% undecided
.
According to NBC
, The Proud Boys' social media account has heeded Trump's "Standing Down and Standing By" remark.
“Standing down and standing by sir,” the account wrote. The account then posted two videos of the answer, including one with the caption “God. Family. Brotherhood,” in which a man howled at the TV in response to Trump’s response.
Proud Boys organizer Joe Biggs also posted he was “standing by,” and said the president “basically said to go f—- them up.”
"President Trump told the proud boys to stand by because someone needs to deal with ANTIFA... well sir! we're ready!!" Biggs wrote.

It looks almost exactly like the current gap in the national polls, suggesting no one was moved by the debate.
They already are, the FBI declares domestic terrorism, not the president, and for the last few years they have loudly, and explicitly said that "White nationalism is the biggest domestic terrorism threat facing the US" while Trump sticks his fingers in his ears and goes "I cant hear you"
I actually would like to address the earlier assertions that this debate may have persuaded some people not to vote at all. Is there evidence that this is a substantial sentiment at the moment? I'll admit that I find that worrying, but I also don't think we should be panicking over anecdotal evidence.

Which is exactly what most people were predicting, barring a major Biden implosion (which didn't happen).
That said, as usual, we will have to wait 1-2 weeks before we can conclude that there was any state/national level movement caused by this.
Also interesting to see the Orange House going into damage control tomorrow.
It was a personal anecdote, so no.

I suppose its a matter of enforcing it (and purging Trump's political appointees).

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. What Trump needed to do in this debate is to try to make himself look good somehow to improve his poll numbers.
I haven't seen the debate yet but judging from the reaction, he didn't manage to do that. Seriously, Trump promoted domestic terrorism and said he flat out wouldn't accept the result of the election unless it was in his favor. Anyone who isn't convinced to vote against him because of that, and everything else he's been doing for the last 4 years, was not going to vote for Biden anyway. Only people who are determined to not have an opinion and trump's hardcore base are gonna come away thinking both were equally bad or that trump did well.

Reminds me of how I've seen too many comments over the years trying to diagnose Trump as if his behavior isn't so obviously a reflection of external factors like being raised in extraordinary wealth by a family that encourages unethical business practices.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I know people have said it half jokingly, but the next debate NEEDS to have a way for them to make Trump shut up. Whether that’s muting his mic when its not his turn to talk (and doing the same to Biden for fairness’ sake), or the moderator calling him out and yelling at him to shut up, or even having security there to handle the situation if he gets to be too difficult. They just need something, anything, to prevent another disaster like tonight. For their own sake if nothing else.

If you need a quick take on Mr. Scully, this a pretty useful look at him handling the strangest of calls for C-SPAN on political opinions:
