Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think I will watch this debate, at least.
Dutch talk shows were talking about it too, and they noted that Trump seems to be mentally in decline, but Biden is also physically in decline, not having the same energy he did as Obama's VP. I think that will play a large role in tonight's debate. I expect that where it comes to sheer energy, Trump will probably outshine Biden.
One program also noted how insanely old these two candidates are, and that that would be unheard of in the Netherlands, to see septuagenarians in leadership positions.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI may or may not tune in, depending on my stamina. I'd almost rather watch it in recap, through the lens of pundits. I can't stand watching or listening to Trump unfiltered for any length of time.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'll be honest, I don't see a reason to personally watch any part of the debate - my mind's made up and I'm already annoyed by the ads on You Tube on my phone.
The damned queen and the relentless knight.Despite most people already knowing who they're voting for, 3/4 of voters plan to watch the debate tonight.

I imagine some people are watching just to see how many times Biden can humiliate Trump in that span of time.
After the four years of unpunished crap that orange blob has put all of us through, it will be at least some satisfaction to come from seeing him punished in some manner at last...
Even if it is simple humiliation and damage done on his ego if nothing else, at minimum.

You don't have to humiliate Trump. You just let him talk and he does that job for you.
Either way I also do not intend to watch it. Not much I can do and any funny memes that come from it will come tomorrow. I just hope to fuck Biden does not blow it.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI'm looking forward to Biden's performance, but what I really want to see Kamala tearing into Pence. He really deserves it and I doubt he'll do particularly well.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSo a member of the Grand Jury in the Breonna Taylor case is trying to get the Attorney General to release all the information that they'd given the Jury
.
"My client wants to make sure the truth gets out," Kevin Glogower, the attorney for an anonymous grand juror, told reporters.
The grand juror has requested in court that any and all recordings, transcripts, and reports of the grand jury relating to the case be released to the public, a move a former Kentucky prosecutor called "totally surprising and tremendously uncommon."
Glogower said Tuesday his client's position is, "What was presented [to jurors] is not being publicly disclosed."
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Monday night said he only recommended charges of wanton endangerment to the grand jury, which did not charge any of the officers with killing Taylor.
Cameron, in a statement, said prosecutors presented all evidence, even though the facts showed use of force by two officers not charged was "justified" because they were fired upon.
"For that reason, the only charge recommended was wanton endangerment," Cameron said. Ben Crump and two other attorneys representing the Taylor family said the grand juror's assertion supports their claim that Cameron "clearly failed to present a comprehensive case that supported justice for Breonna."
That’s what’s being suggested, but we can’t actually know what options and information the grand jury were given unless that information is disclosed, as has been requested.

Buzzfeed News: The Trump Administration Is Giving Up Its Fight To Prevent Undocumented Teens From Getting Abortions
In what appears to be a complete victory for the ACLU (never mind the actual victims of the policy), today the administration ordered the Office of Refugee Resettlement to allow minors in custody to have abortions. This was the basis of a three-year legal battle focused on the ORR's attempts (based entirely on anti-abortion politics) to block detained minors from having access to abortion if they so desired. The ORR will also not be allowed to notify parents or guardians of the minors first without their consent.
The Justice Department agreed to pay the ACLU's legal fees.
I'll take this win.
