Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Is the GOP's official justification for wanting to kneecap public healthcare still 'something something handouts, something something welfare queens, something something pull yourself up by your bootstraps', or are they just not bothering anymore? Because the last four years is increasingly looking like 'that time the GOP just stopped making excuses'. :V
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read! It's often the pretence of "Americans want a CHOICE of a healthcare provider so that they can choose the best one for THEM" never mind that the actual choice Americans face is whether they can afford their heart or diabetes medication that month.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Maher isn't that difficult to put on the political spectrum. He's a very rich white liberal racist. He is ostensibly a progressive but he has no interest in attacking his privilege and that means heavy disdain for minorities (particularly religious ones) or taxing the rich.
I think he was humorously described once as what conservative voters think most liberals are like.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Yeah he’s the caricature of Hollywood Liberal giving living form, with a dose of bigotry towards religious people and young people thrown in (dear god is the man ageist).
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranYeah, cause it sure is the Boomer generation who enjoy superhero movies the most... -_-
Edit: But seriously, isn't Disney and its properties mostly hated by trumpeteers, due to "ruining" movies by "cramming" in diversity everywhere, thereby (somehow) contributing to the fall of civilization?

Roll a Constitution saving throw to make it through the year. He's so out of touch - and not to mention sexist. I seem to recall that he never married because he perceived that marriage emascualated all his friends who tied the knot and he wanted to stay a stallion, or some shit...
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."I'm no expert on Bill Maher, but afair he opposes religion as a concept, he was never racist against any minorities directly.
In this regard, I am quite similar, I oppose any kind of religion, but I would never discriminate any peaceful practitioner of faith.
But like I said, no expert.

So recently news has been going about that Amy Coney Barrett belongs to the ultra-orthodox Catholic group called the People of Praise
, and that some people have attributed them as inspiration for the villains from The Handmaid's Tale, but apparently that's not true and the real inspiration were the similarly-named People of Hope.

Bill Maher needs a lot more nuance in his views on religion — if he's going to criticize religion, he shouldn't just go away low hanging fruit like Islamic fundamentalism or the Christian Right. The former gets co-opted by the right against Middle Eastern people and peaceful Muslims and the latter allows left wing Christians to outflank them on social policy, etc. while still keeping religion in the public sphere. I agree with him that religion, belief in a deity, etc. is mostly just nonsense and that the minimization of religion in our public and private lives will be a net good, but if you're going to popularize atheism, you need to set a good example first.
As for his political alignment, I think he's more or less a liberal, but I think he's latched on to the perceived ascendance of PC outrage culture as a reason to criticize the modern left.
"It's often the pretence of "Americans want a CHOICE of a healthcare provider so that they can choose the best one for THEM"
Americans literally never do this. They're resigned to the insurance their employer gives, usually, which means they're forced to stay at a job they hate or have to leave a job they love because of the plans provided. I don't think I've ever met anyone who genuinely shopped around for health insurance like they're comparing prices at a supermarket.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Maher is mostly a waring or being outdate, he was relevant a decade before when islamic terrorism was thing and while people debate about being polite or even the idea that some things should be sacred or no, he is pretty much a un-PC left liberal, which got more outdated the moment the left decide that wasnt a thing anymore.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Maher is a cynical Gen-Xer who thinks being politically incorrect is being edgy, like the South Park creators.
Also other countries just pity the US now:

Maher is very much anti-Trump, but yeah, he is difficult to place politically. I think he is a liberal, he just hates a very particular kind of liberal.
Remember what I said about how in Europe the Democrats would be a bunch of parties that don't always see eye to eye with each other on things? Maher is basically that.
