The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

DeSantis is going straight into negligent homicide territory all to make Trump look better.

If I didn't know better, I would say that DeSantis' goal was to convince everyone to vote against Trump by demonstrating just how disastrous his ideas are.

Like, this is gonna lead to the COVID number spiking to high heaven in mid-October. The worst possible time for the GOP, in the state they need to fight the hardest for. Biden couldn't ask for a better present.

Trump may reject FDA’s stricter regulations for COVID-19 vaccine: FDA's new standards are meant to shore up public confidence in future vaccine.

Well, no surprises there. Endangering public health for the sake of getting votes.

Judge gives Trump admin. Friday deadline to delay or defend TikTok ban: The ban was never straightforward—and it’s getting more complex by the day.

China's reaction is predictable, but they do have a point: this is a heavy handed and extortionate tactic by the US.

Former Facebook manager: "We took a page from Big Tobacco's playbook": "At worst, I fear we are pushing ourselves to the brink of a civil war," he added.

Speaking to Congress today, the former Facebook manager first tasked with making the company make money did not mince words about his role. He told lawmakers that the company "took a page from Big Tobacco's playbook, working to make our offering addictive at the outset" and arguing that his former employer has been hugely detrimental to society.

Tim Kendall, who served as director of monetization for Facebook from 2006 through 2010, spoke to Congress today as part of a House Commerce subcommittee hearing examining how social media platforms contribute to the mainstreaming of extremist and radicalizing content.

"The social media services that I and others have built over the past 15 years have served to tear people apart with alarming speed and intensity," Kendall said in his opening testimony (PDF). "At the very least, we have eroded our collective understanding—at worst, I fear we are pushing ourselves to the brink of a civil war."

Kendall is far from the only former Facebook employee now to be expressing regret for his former work and staking out a stance against the company. Others, too, have concluded that Facebook is long overdue for some kind of regulation or external enforcement push.

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes last year published a lengthy op-ed calling for regulators to break up the company.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg "is a good, kind person," Hughes wrote at the time. "But I'm angry that his focus on growth led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks... The government must hold Mark accountable. It is time to break up Facebook."

In response to employee allegations and an advertiser boycott, Facebook's company line all summer was, "We don't profit from hate"—directly contradicting what Hughes, Kendall, and other former Facebook insiders have said about the company.

There's not going to be a Civil War. I'm so tired of hearing that term. This shit ends the second the people waving their guns around get scared back into their holes by a higher authority. They're cowards, they'd never risk their lives by actually fighting the government.

Apparently Ron Paul is recovering well already - and as disturbing as it might have been to viewers, it also made sure that he'd definitely get the medical help he needed in a timely fashion since viewers could reasonably contact authorities to alert them.

Senator Doug Jones, despite being in a deep red state and being at risk of losing his seat in November, will NOT support Trump's Supreme Court pick.

I believe that businesses can make their own restrictions, but can only back it up with refusal of service. So no fines, etc.

[up][up] Basically, any legal enforcement or restrictions by local government have been cancelled. So they can tell people and refuse service, but that's just going to have the typical people bitch even more because there's now no law about it.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina have all announced that they will be moving their mail-in ballot deadlines to several days after election day itself. For Michigan, the new deadline is going to be November 17th, for Pennsylvania, it will be the 6th, for Wisconsin, it will be the 9th, and for North Carolina it will be the 12th.

In 2016, when did we know that Trump had won? Was it Election Night? And with all this mail in voting, do we have an estimate for when we will know the results this time?

538 just ran an article on that. So... probably not even for a week or so after, unless Biden is also leading in in-person votes on election night. Or Texas flips or something.

We won’t have confirmed results until either after the latest ballots can be received, or until the number of mail ballots outstanding is less than the lead of a candidate.

We should be able to have a solid guess at the ballpark of the results well before that though, as the vast majority of the counting will be done on election night or soon after.

Florida is probably the one to watch on election night itself, as it might well be called on the night, and if Biden wins it then Trump should stand no chance.

This is changing the subject, but I've been thinking of the possibility of the COVID-19 vaccine that's supposedly coming out soon. Could the release of the vaccine impact the election, in that Trump will attempt to take credit for it and boost his approval?

There’s no indicator that a vaccine is coming that fast, Trump has been claiming that one will, but he’s a well known liar.

Even if Trump does somehow manage to strongarm the FDA into approving a vaccine ahead of time, it's not going to be completed, distributed, and take effect in the next month.

He wants to do that, but there won't be a vaccine before the elections. It's literally impossible.
