The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] Yes, Gov. Northam is term-limited (he's the third Governor to get COVID), and the election wasn't until 2021, anyways.

Former Congressman and well known Libertarian Ron Paul has a stroke on a livestream. Story being updated. Haven't found an article, but the video is up. I...kinda would prefer not to link to it

[up]The lack of backbone and honor in the GOP is outright disgusting for doing this...

I'm praying that the Democratic Party stops them with everything they got.

I won't be mourning Paul either. He was a white supremacist, antisemitic, genocide denying conspiracy theorist who has done incredible harm to discourse. Still, just...disturbing to ee

Court Orders Census Counting To Continue Through Oct. 31; Appeal Expected – After the Trump administration made last-minute changes that shortened the 2020 census schedule, a federal judge in California has ordered it to extend counting for another month.

@parable: I thought they would not want to take up that amount of time for the appointment, but I bet they think it could make a good rallying point for Republicans up and down the ballot.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis issues an executive order to open the state effective immediately.

The four provisions of the order:

  • Removes all state-level restrictions on businesses.
  • Local governments can limit and regulate business, but can't close businesses for failing to respect those limits.
  • Local government restrictions can only go to 50% capacity, anything lower must have an economic and health justification.
  • Cities and counties cannot collect any outstanding fines they issued as part of their pandemic response.

Florida is currently at a 12% positivity rate and rising. I expect the positivity rate to explode to 30% by Election Day.

Mind, I'm being hyperbolic. Hopefully.

[up][up][up] Open up the economy so the Republicans can get some quick votes in on Election Day before people start dying off in droves.

Trump seizes on discarded military ballots in Pennsylvania. Seven of the nine ballots discarded were Trump voters.

Turns out they were discarded because Trump won a lawsuit requiring all jurisdictions to follow a Pennsylvanian law requiring people using absentee ballots to place the ballot in the secrecy envelope before placing them in the mailing envelope.

Hope Ron Paul recovers.

I have no love for him, but I know what a horrible way to go this is. Wouldn't wish this on anybody.
