The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A jury of fair, impartial, and unbiased peers to hear the case against Trump.
That would be impossible to find in the world. Trump is either liked or hated, you will not find anybody in between. If you like him, you're already biased against facts. If you dislike him, you're already biased because any and all facts paint Trump as the worst scum the world has known since Hitler.

I'm sure there must be a provision for that somewhere. Serious criminals get juries too, after all.

[up]In such cases it's usually the judge who ends up making the decision in the end, I believe.

I know a lot of people who are completely indifferent towards Trump, believe it or not.

The Macroeconomic Consequences: Trump vs. Biden an analysis by Moody's about the effwct of a Trump and a Biden presidency on the economy. You'll be shocked to know that Biden's policies will bring a stronger economic recovery and that a lot of Trump's proposals are politically unrealistic.

Okay, how does that happen?

Some people either don't have the energy to care and/or need to divert said energy to focus on their personal lives before looking at the big picture. Or maybe they just want to play Switzerland.

I personally didn't follow politics for most of Trump's presidency until recently so I could try to focus on my own mental well-being. Constantly dwelling on Trump and being consistently appalled isn't exactly good for that.

OJ Simpson got a jury. He was even found not guilty.

It's easy for jurors to just swear that they'll consider the case solely on the evidence and then for the court to take them at their word. Especially if the evidence itself is a smoking gun.

@Rational Insanity: Our Fifth Amendment requires a trial by jury for all felonies unless the defendant specifically waives it.

The OJ Trial basically illuminated a lot of the blindness of white people to their own privilege and white supremacy. The idea that an LA Police Officer would forge evidence to implicate a rich black man married to a white woman sounded like lunacy to them. It sounded like Tuesday to the jury. It was also a legal team that repeatedly attacked the science behind it and the jury wasn't able to understand it because we live in a culture where it wasn't properly explained.

A trial of Trump would require someone to know what laws a President can break. Personally, I'd start with stealing from orphans and veterans. I'd go with rape. I'd go with mass embezzlement. He's guilty of all three and they're very easy to understand crimes.

[up] That Trump Charity Organization, I forget its name, was literally grifting money from itself and from other charities and lining Trump and his Families Pockets. That's why it was closed in 2018, and that's partially why all of Trump's businesses are being investigated in New York.

The Donald J. Trump Foundation held events at Trump's golf club and hotels to raise money for children's cancer charities and the like, and Trump massively overcharged them for using the facilities (I think by some estimates it was 5x the normal rate for such events).

Trump diverted money from his children and veteran's charities to his campaign.

I'm not going to be able to think clearly until I get this off my chest.

I think it might be time to not talk politics with my mom anymore.

She was insistent that, in no particular order, Biden hasn't taken a stand on anything, he's only adopting policies and putting people around him he thinks will make progressives happy, and he'd weaken law enforcement. When I suggested she simply read his website to find out where he stands on X issue, she said it wouldn't suffice. Pointing out progressives generally were not enthusiastic about Biden seemed to wash over her, and and telling her Biden had no plans to weaken law enforcement (citing his CNN town hall) left her unconvinced. She also said she wanted to see Biden take actual action, like going out and campaigning in person as opposed to "running his campaign from his basement". When I pointed out he had been doing just that, she suggested he only did so when he found out his "initial" didn't work, as if that made it not count. I don't remember much else of the argument and frankly I think I prefer it that way, but I suggested she watch the upcoming debates if a Google search was too daunting for her. She said she would, but she seems far too predisposed to think of Biden as "weak" for it to convince her otherwise IMO, even if she'd never admit it.

So yeah. Pick your battles, as they say.

Seems like the best option is to stop talking politics with her. At this point, it seems like you might as well be arguing with a brick wall.

Plenty of people just don't like Biden but will still vote for him.

But I don't know if that's the case there.

She is, she's just not convinced he'll be any better than Trump.

It's pretty much a re-packaging of the "Hillary would've been just as bad" non-argument Trump supporters used to throw around a lot in the good old days.

@M84 My personal belief in that is that if you are truly friends with someone, you should be able to understand whatever they have to say. And if they really are just a massive piece of shit deep down, all the better because now you know.
