Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We'll see. I don't have high hopes for Trump to face any kind of legal consequences. While I'd love to see him prosecuted for conspiring with Russia to undermine our election and flagrantly ignoring the law as POTUS multiple times, I don't expect it to happen.
A billionaire does not face justice. Ever. That is the iron rule of law in the United States.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Logistically speaking, we would need all of the following for Trump to face prison time for his crimes:
- Police willing to arrest Trump.
- A prosecutor willing to pursue charges against Trump.
- A jury of fair, impartial, and unbiased peers to hear the case against Trump.
- A judge willing to sentence Trump fairly.
That third one would be the hardest of all. Trump may die of old age before you find 12 American citizens who DO NOT, in this day and age, have any pre-existing opinions one way or the other about Donald J. Trump.

Possibly to Russia.

Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianRussia would not be the smartest move for him, if only because Putin may say You Have Outlived Your Usefulness.
So I would be very much okay with that outcome.
My musician pageMusing further, even in the best case scenario where things actually escalate that far, I'd expect Trump to be offered a fairly generous plea bargain just for the sake of avoiding the absolute circus that a genuine criminal trial would turn into.
I don't think Trump will flee to Russia. I fully expect, if Biden wins the election, that Trump will flee to Florida. He'll move into the "Southern White House", Mar-a-Lago, declares himself Totes Actual President For Realsies, claim the election was rigged, and try to spend the rest of his days ruling whoever will listen to him from Twitter.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think the bigger issue is finding the right grand jury. How do you assemble a jury of 23 people so disengaged that none have an a priori opinion of him? You wouldn't even be able to get an indictment.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."I fully expect that Trump will stand trial if he's given the boot come January - the question is how many months/years will it be tied up in Appeals and he remains a free man in the meantime? Unlike the shit Epstein was being tried for, white-collar crimes tend not to be ones that land someone in prison while the trial is ongoing, or even after a verdict is rendered.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"If Biden reclaims Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and clears up the Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico), the election's his. It's getting to the point where Democrats can conceivably win without Ohio or Florida.
Virginia and New Mexico becoming blue states is the quiet killer here. There's so much more flexibility when you have multiple paths forward.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Isn't that highly illegal? Like, literally sedition?
Well, yeah, but how hard can that be? If Trump were to just bugger off and no longer gets involved in politics directly, I can totally get people being unwilling to poke the bear. But if he's actually going to claim the title of president and order his cult to disobey the state, then there really is no excuse, right?
Our US ambassador is an idiot called Pete Hoekstra, a Republican who claimed that the Netherlands had lawless no-go zones (it does not), that Europe was turning into Eurabia, and who tried to interfere in our politics by hosting a fund raiser for extre right populist party Forum For Democracy.
I don't think we need to count on that idiot for doing the right thing.
Actually, it is sort of legal as long as they pay their taxes. Or rather, it is not legally enforcible to begin with, so as long as they don't cause too much trouble, they can claim whatever they like, it won't matter a bit for their status as citizen.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest times

I think the important thing to remember here is that this isn’t a “backs against the wall” situation. We still have a lot of cards left to play.
They should have sent a poet.
