Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The important thing to remember about Trump is that he is a coward and a generally lazy person. There is a very good chance that he'll just declare Biden's victory illegitimate and then immediately leave the White House to start a career ranting on OANN for the sake of enriching himself further.
That said, I'd strongly advise every American here to vote early if you can. I know I am.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTrump running again in 2024?
Sure.
Assuming the courts don't drag him to the long-awaiting life-sentence hell of his own making that he has used the White House to cower in fear and hide in for these last four years first, that is.
Or his inherited genetic-dementia doesn't swallow him up in the fog of ages like it did with his father before that.
Or if his unhealthy lifestyle and obesity doesn't strangle his pump from all the fat gathering in his veins and arteries from all that junk food and lack of exercise before either of the other two happen as well.
He has been really busy digging his own grave during his lifetime, so to speak...
I don’t belive there’s anything blocking a person from running for president while in prison. Though he’d not be allowed to vote for himself.

I suspect that the Secret Service might feel that fleeing the country would be dangerous for him, and in the interest of his own safety, stop him from fleeing the country.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIf Trump, by some miracle, is ever jailed, he will never be placed in the general population. All other factors aside, He Knows Too Much. Which means isolation for the duration of his sentence.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. That would be hilarious if Secret Service in their bid to protect him ended up ensuring he couldn't flee the country and ended up in jail or something, especially because the law that allowed Secret Service to still stick to Presidents was signed by Obama.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesConsidering the way Trump has reported treated the secret service and the fact that they are loyal to the constitution, I’d expect it to be less them genuinely doing it to protect him and more them finding protecting him to be a very handy justification for stopping him fleeing the country.

Power. Nothing but power. They stopped trying to convince people ages ago. They know their politics is outdated and unpopular. They know they are doomed to die. Because unlike a normal healthy party, they refuse to change with the electorate. And so, they have chosen to game the system as hard as they can, attain as much power as they can, all to remain relevant as long as they can. But it's the death throes of an obsolete party.
they court the far right and fascism because it's the only option where they can maintain power. They float election stealing, third terms and whatnot because they have no other choice. With immigrants, they believe they're forever loyal to the democrats (which is hilariously inaccurate), with new states they believe they'll forever be loyal to the dems. They've given up as a party.
The only way for the current GOP to survive is to attain enough power that the democratic system cannot overturn it, and to retain influence for as long as they can if that fails. It's why they put everything on the courts, because that's likely to stay for a long time.
I’ve never found panicking to be particularly helpful in a crisis situation, so my suggestion for when is never.
As for what one should do, it depends on ones position and abilities. For the US citizens in the thread I’d recommend voting, campaigning, donating and contacting representatives.
For those of us from abroad, I guess we could contact our own government representatives and ask for them to put pressure on our governments to monitor the US elections and put international pressure on the US to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
International recognition of a Biden win might well help kneecap any elector shenanigans that Trump wants to try.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI mean. Really the answer is that panic is only a useful response if you are in immediate physical danger.
But perhaps it's more helpful to say 'you shouldn't panic about things that you, personally, have no ability to affect.' And generally asking yourself what you can do about something is a better idea than panicking.

> What are the chances that, if Trump loses, he'll just leave in a huff going, "Fine, I didn't want this job anyway"?
I was just thinking yesterday that if he manages to appoint a judge to replace Ruth He'll probably consider it mission accomplished, even if he loses the election he'll still have 'won'
