The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One popular meme before this election was how Biden was basically your funny, slightly-out-of-touch but generally nice uncle, especially to Obama.

Re: the debate over polling: It feels a bit schizophrenic at times, reading this thread, as various people go back and forth on "trust the polls/don't trust them, Biden's got it/we're not taking these threats seriously enough". A lot of people are panicking or on the verge of it, while others are trying to be reassuring but often come across as downplaying what we're facing. And it isn't even just here, I see this almost anywhere I look online, as well as among pundits and on the news.

Is there a middle ground between panic and complacency? What is it, and how in the world do we maintain it?

[up]Also, I adore every one of those "Uncle Joe" memes. One of the few things keeping me smiling and laughing the last few years, especially right after 2016.

Quick question: can Congress pass a bill outlawing felony disenfranchisement? Or is it up to the states?

I think they should be able to, they were able to outlaw literacy tests in the original Voting Rights Act, outlawing felony disenfranchisement seems like a natural progression from that.

[up][up] Easy. Don't get complacent, true, but also don't panic either. Even if forecasts look favorable, you still need motivation to act and make those a reality. Some degree of concern is necessary to make sure we account for all external factors, but focus on how we can use that knowedge to overcome them and not treat failure as inevitable.

Biden definitely has a personal space issue, though I haven't heard anything of that sort for a while, so I guess he is not sniffing people's hair any more.

As for protests about corrupt electors, that's not going to do anything. Trump and the Reps would just write them off as more civil unrest that needs to be stamped out and continue doing what they want anyway.

It is the flipside of being the party of law and order: it basically makes them feel free to do what they want because the protester is always wrong.

I don’t think he’s had too many opportunities to get in peoples’ personal space since the beginning of 2020, to be fair.

Right,t hat's why they keep him in his basement. All bets are off once he becomes president, though.

Let's hope he doesn't become known as the sniffing president or something. grin

I jest, but this could become a serious problem for him. People may tolerate it now to some extent because of who he is running against, but rest assured that once Biden is president, that shit will not fly with Democrats, and especially not with women.

I hope someone can have a good talk with him and he changes his behaviour before it is too late.

Based on his behaviour it seems to have been an issue of not understanding the idea of personal space or that people around him might not feel able to tell him to back off. If it was simply a lack of knowledge than that should have now been solved.

If not, he can always be replaced by Harris if he does do something as president.

I can't wait to see Republicans play dumb today when confronted about Trump's "wait and see" remarks yesterday about peaceful transition of power. "I haven't seen it. What did he say?"

Of course, equally disgusting will be the ones who'll openly embrace a march to a dictatorship.

If I recall Biden has already acknowledged that he wasn't great about respecting people's personal space so he is aware of the problem.

Question on Trump trying a fast one with Electors, doesn't the Election Result need to be certified by Congress to be valid?

The only way Trump's false electors plan works is if the race is down to 1-2 critical tie breaker states that fall under complete Republican control where the State GOP government can fudge with the choosing of electors.

As stated above the critical states that Trump absolutely needs to win to secure re-election most of them do not have complete GOP control, Dems control enough to block any attempts to overturn the elector choice.

The GOP is hoping for another 2000 a single tie breaker state with vote tally that is too close to call and a heaping helping of invalid/unreadable ballots so that could be passed to the Trump Packed SC to again hand him re-election, but all the evidence thus far doesn't point to that situation happening again.

Yep, but there’s no procedure in place for what happens if Congress can’t agree on the results to certify, remember that Dems only control the House, the Republicans control the Senate.

The only way Trump's false electors plan works is if the race is down to 1-2 critical tie breaker states that fall under complete Republican control

Or ones where the state Republicans are willing to issue false electors and the Democrat governor isn’t willing to use force to stop them. That’s the worry with say Pennsylvania.

Here's a good twitter chain arguing that the "Trumps gonna steal Electors" is just a very left field attempt to demotivate dem voters.

[up] Exactly, we can counter act these attempts by simply showing up and voting, if the count is clear and decisive then it doesn't matter what Trump wants since if the results are clear, then no judge is going to say "Welp I don't care if its 53% Biden, I declare Trump the winner"

Trump's plan ONLY works if the results in key states are too close to call, our job is to make sure the results are NOT too close to call.

That was always clear from the beginning. They can only fudge things if the votes are close, the stronger it is in Biden's favor the harder it is for them to say "NOPE, TRUMP WINS".

Me, one thing I was wondering is what happens if there is a big dispute about the outcome of the Electoral College vote and Congress has to intervene.

Apparently this poorly written law leaves it possible that if House and Senate - the newly elected one I think but don't quote me on this - cannot agree on certifying the result the two chambers would have to elect president and vice president.

Now this is obviously a method of last resort - we're talking about essentially invalidating the presidential election and having Congress elect the president instead - but I wondrr if that could happen if Trump and his party push the envelope far enough.

"I can't help but feel deja-vu at "Nate Silver is overestimating Trump's chances, the Democrat will cinch this." "

He really wasn't. Trump managed to thread the needle. Trump's electoral college victory was the equivalent of having a 14-2 football season where eight games are decided by three points or less. Does it look good on paper? Yes. Is it possible to replicate? Unlikely.

I think the real problem was people not really understanding that Silver's 2016 66/33 model still had Trump winning a raw count of 33,000 election simulations, and the spread of possible victories was normally distributed.

That isn't the case here. Even if Trump is projected as winning, his most extreme win still has Biden cracking 190 electoral votes, while Biden's most extreme win has Trump with 24.

I feel Trump and Congress are going to push to invalidate the election no matter what the results are. A convincing Biden victory will just be more fuel for the conspiracy of election fraud by Democrats.

And how willing AG Barr is to create a legalized real-life version of the "Purge" in order to allow Trump's cultists to murder those they consider "anarchists" without fear for punishment by the law.

(I would not put it above Barr to try that, the sleazy gasbag has clearly proven to be a enemy of all democracy the way he has handled his job thus far...)

The good news is that if we sweep the rust belt (Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania), Trump will have to win Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia to even hope for a tie.

Biden has been consistently polling 5-10 points ahead of Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin, and while his lead in Pennsylvania is smaller, I still think he's more likely than not to win it (especially since it's his home state).
