Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Two
articles
about how Trump plans to subvert the election if it doesn't go his way. To a large degree the strategy seems to be to create enough controversy that courts and Republican state legislatures intervene.
I recently re-discovered an interesting tweet
from Nate Silver.
Chance of a Biden Electoral college win if he wins the popular vote by X points:
0-1 points: just 6%!
1-2 points: 22%
2-3 points: 46%
3-4 points: 74%
4-5 points: 89%
5-6 points: 98%
6-7 points: 99%
On the bright side, this means that per the polling Biden is in a good spot. With the added caveat that who even knows how the election will go.
Regardless, the Electoral College is an abomination.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe moderator is from Fox, but I don’t think they pick the questions.
As for Trump’s coup plan, hopefully Dem governors have their national guard units on standby. Because if Republican state legislatures are willing to go along with his idea they may need to be stopped by force.

Also, I'm not sure if that was meant as a double-up like that or just an Oxford Comma error, e.g. "I invited the strippers, Stalin, and JFK" vs. "I invited the strippers, Stalin and JFK"

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife Teresa have both tested positive for the virus.
Not that I would wish it on anyone, but I recall Missouri being one of the states that hated enforcing Quarantine the most, so it comes across as Karmic to me.
Watch SymphogearIm just gonna note, people can be a bit optimistic over these "HERE is how Trump plans to screw the election."
It's a sign he's panicking. The idea of "Oh, get the state electors to cast faithless votes for you isn't going to work. It's a sign he can't throw out ballots or suppress votes. Most of the swing states are already voting. Unless Trump somehow overtakes Biden in polls in those states, there isn't much reason to worry ATM.

The swing states are already voting. This is a man who insisted windwills cause cancer, the moon was mars and Thailand is pronounced Thighland. he's saying the same shit he did in 2016, it's who he is.
Trump says shit he can't back up all the time. Biden's almost certain to win in about 40 days and be the President in 2021
I belive we’ve had conformation that the Republican leader of the Pensilvania House is at least participating in the talks. This isn’t even a faithless elector play, it’s an outright “we’re changing the law to say Trump wins regardless of what the voters decide” play.
The governor of Pensilvania needs to be ready to send in the national guard in the state Republicans try a coup.

A lot of people (me included) thought the same thing about Hilary Clinton in 2016. Never underestimate the kind of fuckery that the Republicans will pull to ensure that their guy wins a "fair" election, or the number of Black Shirts that will cheer them on as they do.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

The stupid thing here, and I can't emphasise this enough, most of the people who died from coronavirus were likely Republican, given the older demographics of the party. So Trump is only harming himself, as usual.
Life is unfair...
