Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Ultimatum: Corvid relief bill? I'd be all for that, corvids get way too much shit
Well played
Edit: more on-topic, what's the likelihood of Moscow Mitch ever suffering any consequences for all the evil shit he's done? Is there anything at all that he could possibly be charged with, or is he one of those immensely frustrating people who you know has blood on his hands, but he's technically not done anything illegal?

Roll a Constitution saving throw to make it through the year. The Democrat strategy is obvious right now: make the GOP look like shameless partisan hypocrites and not give any appearance of "we'd do the same" since the media LOVES a "same thing both sides" story.
People need to stop thinking that just because they don't come out and give a strategy right off that they've committed to signing a blood oath not to
We'll burn that bridge when we come to it. Right now, the last thing we need to be saying to people is anything that even sounds like, "It's a waste of time to vote 'cause Trump will just steal the election anyway, so don't even bother going out in November."
Vote like your life and the lives of people around you depend on it. They actually might.

While there is a possibility of a repeat of Florida in the 2000 election, I don't think the possibility of the Supreme Court overturning an election that couldn't plausibly be overturned by a routine recount is even worth considering.
Neither of Trump's current appointees to the court are unthinking sycophants that will blindly rule in Trump's favor regardless of the situation (and indeed both have broken from Trump on a number of cases for one reason or another). They are both conservative certainly and a 6-3 conservative majority on the court will pose a serious, albeit not insurmountable, barrier to getting the policies the country needs put into place post-2020. But they certainly aren't going to declare Trump king.
You underestimate the greed of the insurance system. With the idea in mind that Covid causes damage to all sorts of different places in the body, any evidence of having caught Covid—i.e. antibodies—could be seen as an insurance risk. Therefore, if they aren't obliged to offer cover for pre-existing conditions, they won't.
Well, in some "good" news, the officer that killed Breonna Taylor has officially been indicted by the Grand Jury
. Whether he'll be convicted remains to be seen, and it's kinda sad that just the indictment is a positive step... but that's why I phrased it as "good" news.
...fuck this entire year right in its ear.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"![]()

Hang on, I know you are being somewhat spurious here but are you saying that having antibodies may be classified as a pre-existing condition? Because isn't it also a sign of immunity (for some diseases) - i.e. we all may end up with antibodies in our bodies thanks to a successful vaccine program, and thus would never of had full blown Covid-19?
Edit, needed another arrow.
