The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

For him to have not gotten a judge, the following would have had to have happened:

  • On-the-fence Republicans would've needed to decide that the calculus adds up and confirming a rushed appointee would hurt, and not harm them. Depending on their state, there are some who would look better to their constituency by looking like they're stealing a seat.
  • They have to actually back their word and not vote until the election.
  • Trump needs to lose in November.
  • Once the elections happen, they need to not realize "okay, awesome. No repercussions for 2-6 years" (depending on if they're thinking about the party or their own seat) and vote the candidate in during the lame duck.

This was a foregone conclusion, at least we can admit it now rather than calling "stating the inevitable" doomsaying.

It's certainly interesting logic there, 'This president should not be holding office, but it's totally fine for him to pick a Supreme Court Justice.'

... for dying?

I mean, yeah. I wish she stepped down in 2012. But not being able to predict... all of this isn't her fault.

I'm pretty sick of the "well, the GOP is flagrantly evil, so I hate the Dems for not being omnipotent and omniscient enough to stop them."

[up][up]I hate her decision to not retire when Obama was first elected, but I don't have any hate for her, and certainly not because of Republicans' sins.

She fought death itself to protect us these last four years. The greatest thing we can do to honor her is finish the fight, that dawn may come in mere months, and not another four years.

[up][up] For not retiring when there was the opportunity for her to choose her replacement, she was what 82 or so?.

Her hubris has screwed the country entirely for decades and probably invalidated all the work she ever did. One step forward, 50 steps back because of it. ESPECIALLY when it comes to Women's rights...

I find your decision to hate an old lady who just passed away rather than the souless politicians who're currently filling the Supreme Court with a certainly equally souless Judge to be quite curious.

You're demanding that she have had foresight into the political landscape and who was in power 8 years in the future?

Even if she had retired, McConnel just would have Garlanded Obama's nominee, too, and Trump would have gotten two seats to fill as soon as he took office instead of one.

[up][up][up] You mean so the Republicans could have blocked that appointment too and we would have gotten into this mess sooner? How about no.

Seriously, hindsight is 2020. When Obama was elected there was no reason to assume the followup would be full blown fascism, and she took the integrity and impartiality of the Court seriously. Playing party politics when she wasn't in immediate danger of death would be a betrayal of what she believed in.

I think the point was that McConnell couldn't have stonewalled that far back.

Wasn't there a Republican pushback in 2010? If she'd retired in 2012, I think we would have seen just how long McConnell was willing to spend shitting on the nation by holding up a justice vote.

It's been fun.

^^ Why not? The Republicans have held the Senate since 2010.

Correction, I was thinking of the House. The Senate didn't flip until 2015. But the Republicans still had the power to block appointments through the fillibuster, because that wasn't removed until the Republicans did so themselves to brute force Kavanaugh through.

Indeed, Ginsberg retiring would likely just have resulted in the GOP having a court majority 6 years earlier.

...I really didn't think I'd have to explain how hating someone for dying is wrong on many, many levels here.

I mean, I expected this reaction from people, but I really hoped it wouldn't show up on OTC.

You think McConnell could stonewall for an entire presidential term without something giving? Or, I dunno, having addressed this problem before also getting something like Trump in power.

Twice during Obama did the dems hold the Senate, both opportunities to choose a replacement.

McConnell's stonewalled hundreds of bills for an entire presidential term already. The man's a monster and one of the biggest roadblocks to progressive policy.

It's been fun.

Yep, honestly Democrats could probably just close their eyes and only pass all the bills sitting on Mitch's desk and it'd would still be a fairly productive Congress.

Pat Toomey will vote for Trump's Supreme Court nominee. I think he's the last swing state Senator (not that he was gonna be a no).

Which was why my point was disbelief that holding up a supreme court pick for an entire term wouldn't have been a bit more noticeable.
