The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Heritage Foundation being cited is just so much more ironic since Obama has repeatedly talked about how Obamacare is basically a Heritage Foundation idea, noting that he takes the best ideas from conservatives when they come up with the best ideas.

Incidentally, what exactly is absentee voting and how does it work?

Absentee voting is voting not at the ballot box, for what I know.

From what I understand, to vote as an absentee, you need to request a ballot from your jurisdiction (or state, or whatever). This has a deadline. You get the ballot by mail and return it, which also has a deadline. These ballots get counted and added to the total. You would do this if you know you'll be away on Election Day and you don't have the ability to go in for early voting.

Military serving overseas get absentee ballots automatically, as I understand it, but there is or has been some controversy over the deadlines for getting them out, which are set by law. There have been cases in which they have not been sent out in time and officials have sought to invalidate them on that basis.

Personally, I feel that you should not invalidate a person's vote because of the postmark on the ballot, except in clear-cut cases like a ballot sent after the election date. However, apparently the majority of certified voter fraud in this country is from absentee ballots.

That's understandable, all things considered.

Isn't part of that that people vote and then die? If you're dead as of election day, you don't get a voice.

(NOTE: I looked it up, and it looks like in Georgia, you need to be 75 to get an absentee ballot? So, in that case, it makes sense why the above is true)

Discrimination against dead people!

That particular bit of "fraud" consists of eligible voters who use absentee or early voting and die prior to Election Day. They voted in good faith at the time they were alive to do so.

Now, a guy dying five years ago who still sends in a ballot... yeah, that's fishy.

When does the debate start tonight? I just hope Obama manages to be more animated while not making any huge gaffes. He may have an easier time considering that Romney has something of a tough act to follow going on.

Starbucks appears to be using what is known as Hollywood accounting; paying yourself money so that your net profit is negative or near zero, so you don't have to pay stakeholders.

That being said, it's your own fault-the tax code allows those loopholes, so of course Starbucks is going to take advantage of them. To do otherwise is to the detriment of the shareholders, and thus morally wrong. Corporations are not individuals, and have moral responsibilities-change the law so that a given course of action is unprofitable, instead of complaining that they're not playing fair.
