Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I get that, but I think it would be better if we didn't conjure up images of a civil war brewing every time someone sees a red hat.
Biden coming out with a pretty amusing campaign ad
You know, if it weren't for the utter stupidity of Trump'supporters, this wouldn't even be a contest.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyYeah, I saw that on Tumblr. Best political ad ever made, bar none.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. While I’m not an American the idea of better healthcare access, improved voting rights, DC statehood, better worker protections/increased minimum wage, progress on combating climate change and similar all seem like reasonable things to be enthusiastic about.
People may not be that enthusiastic about Biden, but I’d say there’s plenty of reason to be enthusiastic about a Biden presidency.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranNot American, but I'm enthusiastic about Biden being president. He respects and understands what the office means and has shown since the pandemic that he has goals if not being just a caretaker but willing to push the country more left
In optimistic news Pelosi has indicated she won't rule out Impeachment during the lame duck period to stop a vote for the SC from going forward. From what I've seen people say an impeachment trial trumps all other matters in the Senate and would have to get resolved before other votes go through.
Tbh, I always kind of liked Biden, knowing full well that he's kinda dopey and has a bad habit of not respecting boundaries. I liked the Obama/Biden friendship memes, and was sad when I realized they would come to an end when Obama left the White House.
That brings me to a point that no one seems to bring up. Obama and Biden seem to genuinely be friends. That's something I could never say about Trump and Pence, Bush and Cheney... I'm too young to remember if Clinton and Gore seemed to be friends.

Do not obey in advance.I'm much more enthusiastic then I expected to be. Not all because of Biden himself, but rather because of his left-ward movement. He's solidly earned my good faith tolerance, whether he lives up to it if he reaches the White House is something we hopefully will get an opportunity to see.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI like biden and at times I kinda get annoyed a some of the left to be mad at him because is not enough left for their taste, as it come as "you have to do more and be more".
I'm ambivalent about it myself, on one hand, I completely understand why socialists wouldn't like Biden considering that they're socialist and he's not even a social democrat but I do wish they'd have more pragmatism. The US is in a really bad state, decent improvement is far better then the alternative.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI don't really know how helpful this train of thought is, considering that as liberalism and socialism are different ideologies criticizing one for not liking the other feels...I don't know, missing the point?

It's not about not liking each other, the problem is when people would rather undermine the side that isn't bloody fascism because "it's not perfect".
Nobody expects socialists to get on board with liberalism or whatever, but the least they can do is not sabotage the only available option.
I've actually seen some people who identify as socialists who pretty much admitted: "Look, I don't agree with Biden, I don't like Biden, but what I definitely don't like is fascism - let's get rid of the fascists first and then try to push the Democrats more to the left".
It's about priorities, you could say.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyI know that Democratic candidates and organizations saw their donations SKYROCKET after the news broke. Anyone know if the GOP also got a surge?
@Rationalinsanity, WinRed, the GOP donation platform, doesn't have a public tracker the way ActBlue does, so it's impossible to know. But they aren't releasing any figures, which makes me suspect it's less. (ActBlue has raised nearly $120 million.)
Maybe Trump and the GOP don't need send law enforcement to intimidate voters and poll workers, just get Trumpites to do it instead: a group of Trump supporters blocked the entrance to an early voting site in Fairfax, Virginia. They've since been disbursed.
Another example of why the courts, including lower level ones, are important. A District Court let the consent decree that prevented a lot of this voter intimidation expire in 2018. Which means the Republican Party can now "monitor" voters at the polls.
The post that started this was
No crap they don't like him, a lot of Leftists are diametrically opposed to the policies he promotes (outside of being "not the fascist").
