Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump eulogizes RBG, says that his nominee will be a woman
in an attempt to deflect from the fact that he's ramming an unwanted Justice through.

Knowing Trump, he'll definitely not even bother read anything in regards to background and pick the first female judge (that lack any dignity and self-respect), who is willing to go down and lick his boots while on tv, like Barr did to get his so-called "job"
If worst comes to worst, he might try and pick one of the people at Fox for it.
'Liberal' means something different in the context of american politics. There, it has become pretty much synonymous with 'Progressive'.
Here in Germany, Liberals (the FDP, to be precise) are basically the Centrist Party.

Leftist circles (i.e. the anti-capitalist Left) use Liberal in the older sense to mean people who defend and uphold the institution of Liberalism - more or less synonymous with anyone socially liberal who aren’t anti-capitalist. This definition catches anyone between Bernie and AOC all the way to many Republicans, depending on how charitable or uncharitable you’re willing to ascribe their aims.
“Progressive” can refer to either Liberals or Leftists but generally refer to that wing of the Dem party and the broader Left that are pushing for more radical change than the moderate/corporate Dems are willing to push for.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Yeah, I mean Republicans decry pretty much anybody left of Reagan as "Socialist", be it Obama, Biden, Clinton, Sanders or whoever else, they'll mash them all together, no matter how little sense it makes.

Its something people say to deflect "Well we aren't THAT bad, everybody else is just as bad or worse!"

Today in "things Trump said", suggesting signing an executive order that Biden couldn't be president.
Just as a reminder what sort of fascist we're dealing with.

Yeah, I don't really like the liberals in my country, and neither would you, I imagine. Our conservative-liberal prime minister, Rutte, thinks Zwarte Piet (you know, the blackface helper of our version of Santa) is not a big deal, even talking about the character in diminutive terms in one debate (which didn't even get called out, I might add). So yeah, liberal does not necessarily equal progressive over here.
Add to that the routine defunding of education and healthcare (basically telling the handicapped they should depend more on their social circle rather than professional health care), adopting an American-style loan system for students, and various other things, and I must conclude that I am not a liberal, at least not in the European sense. I am more generally left wing progressive, closer to socialism.
And if socialism wasn't such a dirty word in the US, I'd wager most of you would be calling yourself socialists too. The word liberal in the US has been hollowed out to the point that it means little more than "left wing". So perhaps we should be more careful about how we use that word in discussions.

This is why executive orders are a bad idea. Their scope and power is just too broad, and invites abuse of power. And a tthe same time they are flimsy legally, and can be overturned at the whim of a successor, as Obama found out after his presidency.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI was going to make some crack about how Trump would probably want to personally interview the woman he nominates for the SC, but, yeah...
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

You mean with the KPD backing the Nazis rather than working with the SPD, only to be purged the moment they outlived their usefulness?
