Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's the most successful option available to them. It's part of what won them 2016. It's already been demonstrated that there's nearly no ghoulish behavior they can't get away with, so locking in a conservative majority is basically win-win no matter how the election goes.

I've decided to turn my despair and panic into something productive and I have donated to Biden and will donate to 3 other Democratic senate candidates.
Now is the time to fight even harder than ever. Make calls, sign petitions, do whatever you're able. We're not beaten yet
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.Oh, but even the most cursory of reflection leads to "If we fill the vacancy, we not only lose a way to increase our own vote, but also incentivise the vote against us, which will both push away from a situation where the results are contestable but increase our chances of losing the Senate, and in the new session hand over an excuse to court pack and take away this majority".
Not even 24 hours to see how the wider public reacts.
I mean the other straw in the wind is that Trump and Mc Connell might have...issues deciding on someone.
Trump is going to have some serious buyers remorse over Kavanaugh from the summer and will want a Trump Loyalist.
Mc Connell will want an ideologue.
And putting Kavanaugh But Worse up is going to be asking a lot of Republicans in endangered seats to fall on their blade. Making the other side angry is a good way to motivate them to vote.
So yeah, it's straws but with a little tanker load of luck...
