The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] I consider myself to be a well-informed person - I regularly read international news, I read from a variety of sources, etc. - and, I'll be honest here (don't think I'm a terrible person), I'm not interested at all in Syria because it doesn't affect me, nor does it directly affect my country's interests. I think most people are the same way here.

Interpret this to mean: Americans want to stay the fuck out of Syria and not get into another war in the middle east. We already got rid of one dictator there and that fucked up our foreign policy and foreign relations for decades.

I'm not evil, I promise.

[up] Oh, well then: Libya, China, healthcare/Obamacare, taxes, some guy talking about how it's the "most negative campaign EVAR" (though nothing beats 1964's Johnson vs. Goldwater [literally, a TV ad showing a girl counting daisy flower petals and then getting blown up by a nuclear bomb with Johnson saying that the stakes are too high to elect Goldwater]), and then fluff issues.

Supreme Court will decide on Arizona voter ID law.

[up]

But if they get in a war with Turkey (our NATO ally) then its very much in our interest.

"nothing beats 1964's Johnson vs. Goldwater"

Ah the classics.cool

Yeah, the twats who think Negative Political Ads are anything new should learn a little history.

Is the next debate this Tuesday or next Tuesday?

This Tuesday. Town hall format.

If you're not familiar with that, it means that it has an audience who asks questions.

EDIT: I see you're from the US. Nevermind.

Tomorrow and one more a week from today.

Actually, since we're having our own discussion session afterwards, do you guys have any suggestions for what to say or ask? I'll relay them for you at my discretion.

(though nothing beats 1964's Johnson vs. Goldwater [literally, a TV ad showing a girl counting daisy flower petals and then getting blown up by a nuclear bomb with Johnson saying that the stakes are too high to elect Goldwater])

Do I have to link Jefferson vs. Adams again? I seem to remember the phrase "children writhing on a pike" tossed around.

[up][up]That depends, what topics are covered during this debate?

Children writhing on a pike, and little girls being blown up by nuclear bombs while counting flowers.

One's just made for TV and slicker/awesome. Let's call them equal. cool

Basically, we're going to have a meeting where we can watch the debate live in our school. After that, we're going to have a discussion session for ourselves.

[up][up][up]I don't know what to tell you since I haven't seen what arguments Obama and Romney make. I suppose you should be prepared to debate about whether or not Obama can take credit for killing Osama since that seems likely to come up.

I don't think Romney will make that point, though. Obama can very easily counter that.

Undoubtedly, only LBJ could make an ad claiming his opponent was supported by the KKK.

Granted this ad never aired, but still.

Romney isn't a stupid man. He knows it'd rile up the base, but he also knows that Obama can very easily counter it among moderate voters by simply stating that he (Obama) called the shot.

[up]Do most people credit Obama? I honestly don't know. Now if he explained why he felt he's responsible that's one thing but if he just says "I did that" then he's just asking for a slew of "You didn't build that!" memes.

Somewhat good news regarding the debate: Pizza Hut is probably going to stay out of it.

Or bad news, depending on how much you wanted to hear someone ask a really stupid question.

@Kostya

Well, I looked up our campus meeting and apparently, the discussion session is about "strategies and factors that influence the election". So it might be more academic and focused on the nature of debates.

Anyway, I'll say more about it after I actually attend one.

It's going to be about political science, which, unless you're interested in both statistics and sociology, will be very, very boring.

Such questions as: Is the theory of generations correct, or do political views change as people age?

I find it fascinating, but others may disagree.

re economy: just checked S&P, Nasdaq, and Dow prices from close today, and we're not quite at 2008 levels yet—close, though. Definitely better than 2009, but if we weren't better than that, then there'd be problems.

Well, he is 90 years old. Good man, though.

Didn't Nixon tap his phone lines? He could have very easily won without doing that; McGovern wasn't exactly a great campaigner. Plus, he dropped his VP when people found out he was crazy.

In fairness to the VP thing, Mc Govern choose Eagleton out of desperation, as all of the major Democrats (Ted Kennedy, Mondale, Humphrey, Birch, Muskie, etc) he offered the VP position to avoided him like the plague. After former Governor/Senator Gaylord Nelson decline but suggested Eagleton, Mc Govern was desperate enough to go for it.

Although he probably should have preformed a better background check. He most certainly should not have said that he was "1000 percent behind Tom Eagleton, and I have no intention of dropping him from the ticket."

Still upset Stein and Anderson didn't make it onto the Nevada ballot.

4 people on my ballot are Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Gary Johnson, and (surprisingly) Virgil Goode. I got my sample ballot in the mail due to being a poll worker.

Sucks that Obama is the best option on the ballot.
