Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You're right, Gorsuch is who I meant. Thank you for the correction.
The threat worked for the Court Franklin D. Roosevelt had; even though he failed in packing the courts, the threat of it happening was enough to mellow out the court, allowing for many of Roosevelt's later New Deal Policies to survive Court Challenges (before they were all just being struck down left and right). Unlike the 1930's, packing the Court today has, and will have, a lot more support (especially after Trump's Uberconservative is put in office), which will force the majority of the Court (barring the Uberconservative) to know where to draw the line with their rulings, specifically Abortion and LGBT+ rights.
The majority of the Supreme Court would know, though, that the majority of American Citizens will not accept that. They know all their decisions have weight to them, they know the people are paying attention, and they know if they make one serious wrong move they're damning the court; Roberts saving Obamacare specifically. Roberts, Alito and Thomas would know that trying to rework a previous decision most of them were a part of would look so bad, and be a threat to the Constitution itself.
On top of that, Gorsuch has shown he has principles that he will not stray from, and that principle is Originalistic Constitutionalism, which he has shown again and again. For Gorsuch to throw out an Election he'd be going against everything he believes in and reveres. Kavanaugh I could see going either way, and the Uber Conservative would definitely side with Trump in any way.
Maybe I shouldn't have said "There's no way"; technically there's always a way. But as of now, I am very skeptical.

I think they can, but they don’t need to be that quick: they also have the two months after that.

My musician page@ Mr Hellboy As people have mentioned, packing the courts has been a long-discussed option, for one. Ending lifelong appointments is another. This may be the tipping point for the public of how rotten the current system of administering the Supreme Court may be, and persuade the public to accept not abolition, but major reform or overhaul of the Supreme Court.

Whelp. So the Republicans have six seats on the Supreme Court now. That sucks.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That would be Justice Breyer, who I believe is 82 years old. Another liberal justice, so that's somewhat worrying, although I don't recall hearing any worries about his health recently.
Clarence Thomas, however, has held his seat the longest.
Anyway, the question I'm wondering is this - if enough Republican senators due in fact defect to block a nomination, then what would that do to their reelection chances?
Oh God! Natural light!![]()

I was responding to Alley Oop's comment on lifetime appointments.

They have six. There's no scenario where they don't.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Rather worryingly, I was reading an article on Roberts' lifelong legacy of eroding voting rights
if people further want to know what's at stake if we don't push as hard as we can to get Democrats in as many seats as possible this November.
Again do not doomsay over this or take this downward spiral for granted. Use this to energize yourself over what's at stake, and what we need to fight against once we've left the polls.
I do agree with Dingo Walley though, while Roberts and Gorsuch are bad about election rights, I don't think they're so far gone that they'd let Trump steal an election. Still this is very bad.
You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midThis topic is getting a cooldown lock. Seriously, people. I know this is shocking news, but can you please act with a modicum of decorum and common sense?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

@Parable I see Murkowski claiming she would not vote until after election day.
Not a first-hand account, so take it with a grain of salt, but even then, the Exact Words are too obvious...
