Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Unless Biden decides to pack the courts, rights for women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ people can just be tossed in the trash now. Someone like Tom Cotton, who promised to overturn Roe v Wade is getting a seat and there's nothing we can do.

My musician pageThey can try. At this point, they need to just arrest Mitch Mc Connell and his cronies on the street for various crimes they've committed. Don't let them cheat like they think.
They don't have immunity.

May your memory be a blessing, Justice Ginsburg. You will be missed.
To try to be optimistic, Trump and McConnell pushing through a Justice might be the thing that gets Democrats to say "screw this" and pack the courts.

@Boston, don't be silly. That rule only applies to Democrats. Republicans get to do whatever the fuck they want, because Jesus and the Free Market.
At this point, I think court packing is a requirement if Biden wins. Especially if a war criminal wannabe like Cotton (who wanted the most storied US military units to murder protestors) gets the seat.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I think we all need to keep in perspective that the Supreme Court isn't our Democracy. If Trump and McConnell successfully ram through another Uber Conservative, then that will inflame the Democrats who will come out in droves and in favor of packing the Court, and Biden will either pack the Court or threaten it with that action which would be enough to scare all the Conservatives (except for this new Uber Conservative).
Our Democracy isn't dead just because Ginsburg died; only if Trump wins a Second Term will our Democracy be in major trouble.
There is no way Constitutionalists like Kavanaugh and Garland (especially Garland) will just throw away the Election. Even Alito and Thomas I have a hard time believing they'd do that. There's already precedent as well that you can't just throw away an Election because the results are in dispute (Gore v. Bush, 2000). Only the Uber Conservative they ram through would give it any serious consideration.

x4 This is probably the MO. Though, they're going to kill two birds with one stone and try to roll back any civil rights legislation they can.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer
x4 Adding more justices can't just be used as a threat, you'd still be leaving an overwhelming right-wing majority where one person appointed three judges for the exact purpose of being as ideologically extreme as possible.
"There's no way" is, of course, bullshit. They just need to work out some fancy way of making it sound like it's justified and carry on.

Democracy has been dealt a major blow but we aren't completely without weapons. As mentioned before there is the court stacking option, not to mention the more radical Democrats will be empowered to take more dramatic action. And while I still consider it to be a measure of absolute last resort, if push comes to shove, the revolutionaries will step forth.
Correct, I'm willing to admit I'm in the same boat. But people are running around like beheaded chickens declaring that democracy is dead, dead, dead and buried in the ground. When as mentioned before we aren't without options, even if we're approaching "smash the glass in case of emergency" conditions.
