Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About death panels and people who decide if homeophathy should really be bought on government money...
The British version: called NICE
and their Wikipedia page
, if you can't be bothered to look through the bumf.
Enjoy.
Oh: note the lack of death's heads, scythes and general creepiness. But, look at all the ink. Lots and lots and lots of ink. Heck: I trust these guys more than I do a batch of privately owned insurance companies I can't get an ombudsman to yell at.
And, hey: at least I know who to complain about when things go belly up.

Now I want to create a Civil War Thread, but I just know that the Mods would never give it a green light.

Of the ways in which a president has interacted with popular culture, this is quite a step down from Nixon shaking hands with Elvis.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Huh, okay. Thanks for the information, everyone.
I don't know about the US, but I've heard there's something similar in the Australian hospital system. Hospitals have limited resources, like organs and expensive medication. Unfortunately, that means sometimes advisory boards (with doctors and health economists, not bureaucrats) have to decide whether a patient will really benefit from a treatment, or whether it would be better to give that treatment to someone else (the other patient will still receive treatment, just not optimal care). It's heartbreaking, but has to be done. More healthcare funding would help.

Not sure how Australia deals with it, but... the UK has the NICE guidelines that stipulate how a condition is supposed to be treated. If a care authority can be shown not to be following the NICE guidelines by refusing suggested treatment pathways, you can take 'em to the cleaners, regardless of local resource issues, sometimes.
Granted, with some conditions, you'll probably be dead by the time you get a legal ruling, but at least your family will get the compensation and the NHS Authority will get a slap on the wrist and have to face further investigations.

Can you imagine if Obama or Biden did that? Fortunately this is on CBS so it might actually get noticed by people.

I have a feeling there is no official source. There's no rational reason for them to do this and given the professionalism of the BLS I doubt they'd make such a glaring mistake. It just sounds like a right wing myth that was cooked up to "explain" the numbers in a way that doesn't make Obama look good.

Wow: it takes cynical media manipulation to... interesting depths. Hope the charity can take him to court for the breaches of their rules for the one...
And, that you can sort out what the heck is going on with the other. It still smells... rather baked.

Still looking...
...but here's one secondary source.
At least two major sources, both left and right, has support it, with no refutes.
Still, I'm skeptical.

Even Romney admits the economy is getting better.
Considering the state it was in when Obama took office, he would have to fuck up massively for it to get worse. What we should be concerned about is whether or not the average person is benefiting the most from the recovery, or if they're lagging behind the rich in terms of income growth. Hint: it's the latter. Of course, the idea that Romney will do any better in that respect is an absurd delusion.
There are legitimate criticisms to be made about Obama, but looking to Republicans for them is a horrible idea. These people don't paint an accurate picture of Obama's accomplishments or failures, and at every other time they are beneath our contempt. Why accept their conspiratorial claims about the job numbers as a framework for discussion, then?

I am skeptical that it isn't revealed which large state didn't file that data.

Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.There's 300+ million people to campaign to and the popular vote is close nearly every election. It may look like a large difference due to the electoral college, but the popular vote result in nearly always 52/48.

@Kotsya: According to my dad, the Department of Labor said that they excluded one large state from the statistics compared with previous years, but I'll have to check.
