The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump announces he signed an executive order to establish a committee to promote patriotic education; calls out the 1619 project.

Thankfully, we're too close to the elections (and the school year has already started so the curriculum can't be changed) for this to take effect.

I'm sure Russian bots exist but I don't think it's very useful to hyper-focus on them. For the Bernie or Bust movement to exist you just need people who really dislike Biden and don't actually include harm-reduction in their set of principles.

All the evidence we have indicates that the Bernie or Bust movement does not exist in any substantial way, his voters showed normal levels of crossover to Clinton in 2016 and polling had 87% of Bernie’s primary voters going to Biden back in July, with more likely to have come onboard since then. That’s more crossover to Biden than either Bloomberg’s supporters or Klobuchar’s.

The Bernie or Bust movement isn’t a thing of substance, it’s a combination of a vocal minority (which happens to include some people who worked on Bernie’s campaign), twitter trolls, Russian bots and Trump supporters who never backed Bernie.

From a political force perspective it doesn’t exist.

Also if a person’s political ideology is defined as “dislike of Joe Biden” and they oppose harm reduction I seriously question how they’re left wing, even if they genuinely think they are.

God, the election can't come quickly enough. I just hope that if Biden's elected, things don't become even worse in the interim between him being elected and inauguration day.

It's perfectly in line with Republican belief that blue states don't actually count as America (until they need something, or need to crow about how Democrats are the ones who are divisive).

Frankly this '"patriotic education' would have probably been more effective at indoctrinating students when Trump first took office at the beginning,as it is this is a desperation move that serves no real purpose other then intimidation, and I dont think anyone is going to wind up actually teaching it

While Trump would pretty much complain about everything Biden would do if he's elected president, how would he react if he did these in particular?

  • Biden reentering the Iran Nuclear Deal

  • Biden imposing banking sanctions on Russia for interfering in American elections (Possibly followed by supporting a movement that gets Putin ousted from the Kremlin)

  • Biden re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement

  • Biden imposing stronger gun control. And if protests against it get too unruly, he sends federal officers to subdue the protesters.

  • And of course, Biden issuing an executive order that renders all of Trump's policies on immigration and environment null and void.

Regarding the Iran Deal, Trump would accuse Biden of selling out America. As for the anti-gun control protests, I imagine many of the demonstrators would be Trump supporters. And if someone gets killed, Trump would explode and accuse Biden of mass murder.

No, y'see, the Conservatives aren't seeing mega corporations aren't dumping waste in the water they drink. The other great Conservative power is Denial.

This.

Conservatives aren't against most of the very important regulations that protect public health. If you sit them down and explain to them that XYZ regulation prevents waste from being dumped in their drinking water, they'll say yeah, that's one of the good ones. What they're concerned about is all the unnecessary regulations.

What, exactly, are the unnecessary regulations? Fuck if they know. But they're there, and they're a problem, and we must vote for Republicans because only Republicans will slash them. Republican voters are convinced that for every regulation that actually impacts public health, there are ten more regulations that read,

"Plastic isn't allowed to be used anymore. Why? BECAUSE I SAID SO, THAT'S WHY! Plastic's banned forever LOL!"

The "Unnecessary Regulations" bogeyman is 100% a Windmill argument.

Is the "patriotic education" thing something that can even be done, or at least done quickly?

If it's what I think it is, it's something we're already doing. Trump is trying to draw a line in the sand to defend the historical revisionism we've been teaching in our schools since before I was born.

  • Pilgrims arrived on this continent and became besties with the Native Americans, even though they were uneducated savages who ate their own dung. We gave them education and tools and lifted up their society and they, in turn, helped us survive the hostile winters.
  • The American Revolution was a populist revolt against the tyranny of unjust British taxes, led by Everyman commonfolk like you or me using their Second Amendment rights to soundly and unambiguously DESTROY the might of the once insurmountable British Empire.
  • We DO NOT speak of the Native American genocides. That did not happen.
  • We DO NOT speak of Northerners, including our Founding Fathers, owning slaves. Slavery was exclusively a practice in the Confederate States, which Northern Whites valiantly extinguished.
  • We DO NOT speak of the War of 1812, where the Brits kicked our asses out of Canada. Didn't happen. Britain never recovered from the stomping we gave them in the American Revolution, and certainly would never dare fight us again.
  • WWI existed but it wasn't important and nothing actually happened. It was just a brief skirmish that acted as a prelude to....
  • WWII, where the whole world was getting slaughtered by Germany until America RODE IN ON A SHINING HORSE and stuffed the Nazis' faces up their own assholes. And then also beat the shit out of Japan for good measure.
  • Then, in 1964, Martin Luther King made a passionate speech about how protests should always be peaceful and violence is never an acceptable form of civil unrest. As a result, the Civil Rights Act was signed and all racism was ended forever.
  • At some point in the 70's, feminism happened briefly and then all sexism was ended forever as well. From then on, the United States was a completely egalitarian country and nobody was ever oppressed or disenfranchised ever again.
  • Vietnam sucked. No, I'm not going to explain what happened. Just know that it sucked, and that it was the last American war until terrorists made us invade Iraq.

This is American history according to our education system. The 1619 project that Trump's reacting to with his "defend patriotic history" bullshit is a re-examination of the effects and experiences of American slaves during the establishing and founding centuries of this country's history.

Same here, but that's probably a sign of how varied the quality of public education can be in the USA. In my case, I grew up in an affluent area in California where the public schools were well-funded.
