Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump is the most asinine Inferiority Superiority Complex example there is.
He keeps acting like Biden is President because he feels he can't measure up.
And he can't.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I think it has to do with how Trump likes to present himself as the outsider, the underdog. And that's hard when he's the one in charge.
Basically, he's trying to have the same dynamic he had with Obama, as the outsider criticizing the sitting president. That's what he's most comfortable with. Why do you think he kept yammering on about Clinton so long after she stopped being relevant?
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThe debates are going to be hilarious at this rate. Never would you have imagined that the killer line in a debate would be "I'm not the President" as if that was news to the other party.
What else should we put on our bingo card? Trump actually calling Biden President in the present tense? Trump trying to slam Biden's record as a failed businessman? Biden having to coach Trump through a full-on psychological break?
CNN:
Attorney General Barr suggests charging violent protesters with sedition
Since taking office in 2019, Barr has lashed out at a group of left-leaning district attorneys in cities around the country who have sought to change the way they prosecute low-level drug and other crimes.
It's a theme that has gained traction in conservative media, which Barr follows closely, and he is known to focus on the issue from time to time. Still, some federal prosecutors were taken aback last week when the attorney general brought up the possibility of charging violent protesters with sedition, which makes it a crime to conspire to overthrow the US government.
I'd hope not. According to the article,
this law is a very rarely used one. I can't imagine anyone taking this seriously, except of course, the Attorney General is pushing it.
Incidentally, I'd argue part of the whole "Deep State" narrative is to defuse what would otherwise be a Logic Bomb for conspiracy theorists who support him. Namely, the fact that 'their own guy' is now in a position of very considerable power and basically in the same position they'd normally reserve for the Big Bad of their narratives.
Leviticus 19:34
The conspiracy theories about the deep state, and Trump acting like Biden is president now, not to mention the overall rhetoric about how liberals and socialists are going to destroy America, are consistent with usual attitude of authoritarians that they themselves always the underdog/victim/persecuted minority, while anyone that dares to resist, the actual victims of their policies, are demonized as the enemy, the shadowy cabal hiding everywhere pulling the strings and must be destroyed no matter what it takes. It's not just the right wing in the US, it can be found pretty much anywhere where any group that has amassed a lot of power for decades find themselves challenged by even the smallest opposition.

Qanon is something that justifies racism and treating the Democrats as demons. It doesn't require you to explain how Trump has accomplished nothing in the past few years. The Deep State is apparently so powerful that controlling the Senate, House, and Presidency meant nothing.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. There's an article from Washington Post titled "Federal officials stockpiled munitions, sought 'heat ray' device before clearing Lafayette Square, whistleblower says".
It's paywalled, but there's an NPR piece on the 'heat ray' part here
Hours before federal police officers cleared a crowded park near the White House with smoke and tear gas on June 1, the lead military police officer in the Department of Defense for the D.C. region asked if the D.C. National Guard had a kind of military heat ray that might be deployed against demonstrators in the nation's capital, according to one of the most senior National Guard officers on the scene.
In written responses to the House Committee on Natural Resources obtained by NPR, Major Adam DeMarco of the D.C. National Guard said he was copied on an email from the Provost Marshal of Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region. He was looking for two things: a long range acoustic device, a kind of sound cannon known as an LRAD, and a device called the Active Denial System, or ADS.
The ADS was developed by the military some twenty years ago as a way to disperse crowds. There have been questions about whether it worked, or should be deployed in the first place. It uses millimeter wave technology to essentially heat the skin of people targeted by its invisible ray.

Thanks. I included a link to your original post to offer appropriate credit.
Offering something on-topic, if silly on the face of it:
Military Police Leaders Weighed Deploying 'Heat Ray' Against D.C. Protesters – Hours before federal police cleared peaceful protesters near the White House on June 1, a whistleblower got an email asking to find a device that would make protesters' skin feel like it was burning.
In that case attempt 2 at something relevant and on topic:
Ohio judge blows up GOP plan to allow only 1 ballot box in each county – The limitation in the battleground state is arbitrary and unreasonable, the court said.
The office of Secretary of State Frank La Rose said he would soon appeal the decision by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Richard Frye, assuming the judge follows through and invalidates the secretary’s drop-box order.
For now, Frye’s ruling doesn’t change anything, La Rose spokesperson Maggie Sheehan said in a written statement, “and the Secretary’s directive remains in place.”
Access to ballot drop boxes has become an urgent matter nationally, with in-person voting options restricted by the coronavirus pandemic and the efficiency and security of mail-in voting questioned amid cutbacks at the U.S. Postal Service.

That's good news! I'm glad they've ruled against limiting the number of dropboxes.
Wow, a Trump official sees consequences (no matter how weak) for bad behavior.
Meanwhile, Barr continues his week of awfulness, saying calls for coronavirus lockdowns are the 'greatest intrusion on civil liberties' other than slavery in US history
, conveniently leaving out Native American genocide, Jim Crow and Japanese internment camps, just to name a few. He also mocked his own department and dismissed its career officials, declaring all agency power 'is invested in the attorney general'. [1]

Senate Republicans, possibly due to facing the prospect of losing the chamber this November, "signal openness to working with Biden"
. These suddenly bipartisan Senators include John Thune (SD), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Chuck Grassley (IA), all of whom were noted for reaching across the aisle during the Trump and Obama eras. /s

Is he serious? Lol.
