Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It’s not perfectly clear what happened, but we have reports that during the protests in DC Trump got in a shouting match with some generals in the Oval Office, combine that with the fact that it was federal police and not the military who tear-gassed people and the indicators are that Trump tried to order the military to do something to the protesters, got told no by the military but got a yes from Barr and federal police units.
I believe that not long after the incident the DC national guard were withdrawn, presumably because they weren’t doing what Trump wanted.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMillennials and seniors are spurning Trump. Here’s why middle-aged voters are sticking with him.
Pundits and experts will be befuddled if Biden wins, because his win will mainly thanks to elderly voters becoming blue. Thanks to COVID-19, not surprisingly.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanA bunch of Never Trump/former GOP campaign staffers (including those who work with the Lincoln Project) are both baffled and encouraged by seniors turning on Trump. Because, as far as their experience tells them, Republicans do not win national (and many state wide) races without a large portion of seniors backing their tickets. If Biden even comes close to breaking even on the demographic, Trump is in trouble in many key states (and that's independent on his struggles in other demographics).
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. What does that say about the status of the "American Experiment" here?
Define “stop”? Trump’s agenda has been fought at every turn by basically every other part of the government, to the point that he’s had to turn to executive fiat to get literally anything done. Are you talking about impeachment? We knew from the start of that process how it was going to go by its very nature as a political, rather than criminal, process. The fact that we’re getting ready to vote and publicly discussing the ways executive power needs to be limited means the American experiment is still ongoing.
They should have sent a poet.Mass hysterectomies at ICE concentration camp
I believe that is now two of the UN's definitions of genocide.

I know exactly why they're doing it, and it's for a reason that Trump's supporters will genuinely support - to negate the possibility of "anchor babies" for those women. For a party that crows about "Sanctity of life", they're fucking abominations at actually respecting it.

My musician page"If you're pre-birth, you're fine. If you're pre-school, you're fucked."
I hardly think this is "misaimed" at all.
Agreed - this is exactly the kind of shit his supporters want. Trump supporters are deeply horrible people.

What more is there to say? It’s not like we can do anything about them until the election.

My musician pageYeah, "You talk about China's camps, but what about America" is literally something tankies love to throw at my head whenever I bring up the Uyghur genocide.
At least America still has a democratic system - albeit a pretty shit one - that allows you to get these genocidal arseholes out of office.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyI'm reminded of George R.R. Martin telling a story about how college experience. He had heard about all the dope, music, and free love that college was supposed to be about and was all excited for it, then arrived on campus to discover the local scene was devoted to defending Mao.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. If this is true (and I have little reason to believe it isn't), ICE needs to be disbanded, the bulk of its workforce blacklisted from the public sector (and the security sector), at minimum. Asking for the organization to be declared criminal, Nuremberg style, is way too hopeful, but I can dream.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Honestly, I think one of the main reasons the US hasn't acknowledged the ICC's authority is because they'd have to fill multiple planes with people to send there, including members of previous governments (and a few presidents).

We learn from history that we do not learn from history

I agree that the US does not deserve such a fate.
But it can't be ignored that some of its people have done insane damage to its reputation in the world already.
And that Trump has used law enforcement against peaceful protesters just to take a stroll to a church and make a obvious photo-op just to "improve his image".
And nobody has stopped or reigned him in for the last four years, despite the Constitution telling them to do so with any sitting president.
What does that say about the status of the "American Experiment" here?
...
Let's just hope that Trump gets voted out in November and that's the end of this nightmare that has been the "TV-Presidency".
