Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It started innocently enough in 2008. But it's gotten so bad that even the person who did a gender reveal party first, Jenna Karvunidis, is telling people to stop.
And all she did was cut a cake that had pink frosting on the inside.
This is a quote from her Facebook entry telling people to stop:
“Stop having these stupid parties. For the love of God, stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid’s penis. No one cares but you.”
One thing to note is that Jenna's daughter for whom she did that reveal party is a fan of wearing suits, and Jenna is nothing but supportive.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt just started as a cute way to reveal the gender of the new baby. And no, there is nothing wrong with assuming the gender of a newborn. It's not like the parents can ask them if they are trans, you know.
Then people copied the idea, and made the gender reveal parties more and more spectacular, and now they've gotten rather out of hand.
Also, I imagine they are called gender reveal party because "sex reveal party" sounds... rather questionable.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesApparently the DHS secretary told him to stop because the reports were embarrassing Trump.
Is negligent arson a crime the same way negligent homicide is? And is there the political will to bring serious criminal charges against people responsible for the party? I know they’re potentially looking at being finned the cost of dealing with the fire, but a fine doesn’t carry the weight a jail sentence would.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWell, there was this story
a few years ago about a border patrol agent who started a 47,000 acre wildfire, and was ordered to pay 8 million in restitution, to be paid in monthly payments, starting with 100,000 dollars.
So yes, you can be convicted for causing a forest fire with such a party, and get a hefty fine for it as well.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesA fine has much less of a deterrent effect than a lengthy jail sentence, which also has the added benefit of keeping the perpetrators is an environment where they can’t set another such fire.
A lifetime ban on owning explosives might also be in order.
This just makes me thank my stars that terrorists are almost universally stupid and egotistical.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSounds about the same as a 500k fine to me, something totally unpayable that would force me into bankruptcy.
A big part of a deterrent is going to need to be punishing risky behaviour that luckily doesn't result in a huge fire. You can’t just go after the one group who actually set the entire state on fire, you have to go after everyone who engages in the kind of reckless behaviour that starts such fires, otherwise people aren’t detected because they think that any fire they start won’t get out of control.

https://apnews.com/8e610effec6e294be01f25035393b6b9
The hosts of the fundraiser, Caryn and Michael Borland, have shared QAnon memes and retweeted posts from QAnon accounts, their social media activity shows. The baseless conspiracy theory posits that Trump is fighting entrenched enemies in the government and also involves satanism and child sex trafficking.
Beyond Pence, the Sept. 14 fundraiser in Bozeman, Montana, is expected to draw influential figures in the president’s orbit including Kimberly Guilfoyle, a top Trump fundraising official who is dating Donald Trump Jr., GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, Republican National Committee finance chairman Todd Ricketts and RNC co-chairman Tommy Hicks Jr., the event invitation shows.
While many Republicans have dismissed QAnon, the fundraiser is another sign of how the conspiracy theory is gaining a foothold in the party. Trump has hailed Georgia congressional candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene, another QAnon supporter, as a “future Republican star.” The president has refused to condemn QAnon, recently telling reporters that the conspiracy theory is “gaining in popularity” and that its supporters “like me very much.”

Trump just announced Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz as possible SCOTUS picks.
Cotton's first tweet after the announcement?
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Ok, who wants to do the whole song and dance about how the Democrats shouldn't court-pack if and when they get the opportunity to do so, cause it opens up the door for all kinds of Republican shenanigans that they TOTALLY WOULDN'T DO OTHERWISE, and it's subverting democracy, and so on and so forth
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.

When did "Gender" reveal parties start, and why?
I can't help back think these things exist for deeply reactionary reasons, but I don't want to assume that much bad faith.
Also what happens if the fetus turns out to be intersex?
