The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem with Trump when it comes to the virus is his absolute desire for a magic bullet. Science is not magic. It takes time, energy, and resources. The solution isn't always simple. It's why he pushes for all sorts of quack cures and quick solutions. Science doesn't work that way.

I'm gonna say politicizing and not supporting the CDC, not cooperating with disease monitoring in other countries like China so we had to rely on what their government said, and throwing out pandemic plans handed down from the Obama administration.

Did I mis-characterize or miss anything there?

He doesn't just want a magic bullet, he wants to be the one to fire it, and the credit for both making and firing it.

Trump has never faced a problem that he couldn't bribe or pay off to make it go-away, that he couldn't beat with lawyers. He really had NO IDEA how to handle a real national emergency, had no idea that it wouldn't be over with in a few weeks, or he could distract with some other news.

As a result he has no idea how to fix this...or worse he does know and that would mean swallowing his pride and dig out those Obama Pandemic Plans, and admit he was wrong (yeah...right) And even worse he has so many yes men around him that its highly possible he really doesn't know how bad it is.

I think on some level he really doesn't know how to handle this. Like you said, he is used to being able to bribe or talk his way out of a problem, or else distract from it and pretend it didn't happen.

Trump is not a problem solver, he is a problem evader.

He doesn't even evade problems correctly. Henry Clay was a problem evader, and his clever evasion tactics essentially guaranteed a Union victory a decade later just by the sheer advancement of technology that happens in ten years alone.

Being upset that something you really enjoy has thrown itself in with politics you don't agree with is pretty normal. I'm not sure I want to laugh at him for that.

It's bad enough that we have a lot of Qultists running around and calling the shots in the world's superpower, but the cult is also spreading around much of the developed world at an astonishing pace since the beginning of the pandemic. I've seen a number of conservative Korean, British and Australian internet personalities promote Q-based anti-vaxx/anti-mask/anti-science conspiracies and the usual pedophile cabal theory while expressing support for the orange cheeto.

This pandemic really is exposing and emboldening the worst of conservatives around the world.

Trump's presidency reminds me of Baltar's. I finally think we have a fictional example that correlates.

Oy, you owe my man Baltar an apology for that. Puppets of higher powers/foreign nations they both may be, Baltar at least refused to sign off on death warrants until he literally had a gun forced against his head being screamed at to sign it after watching the only person in the room who actually supported him get capped. He'd also actually be one of the best persons to be in charge during a pandemic, surprisingly enough.

Trump endorses extremist violence of his own free will.

Is anyone else a little concerned going into the debates? Biden's lead in some battleground states has begun to shrink a bit, and many do think that Trump will come out on top during them.

I'm not sure what the basis people have for thinking Trump will do better in debates. He's so babbling and incoherent that all Biden has to do is be calm and professional and automatically he looks far better than him.

[up] I think that there is a concern that Trump will be able to out-bluster Biden in a debate, simply by dominating the conversation and out-shouting him.

I think that there is a concern that Trump will be able to out-bluster Biden in a debate, simply by dominating the conversation and out-shouting him.

The problem with this argument is that it assumes that people who are feeling vulnerable want bluster, it will play well with his base but appealing only to them is the most dangerous path for Trump (which of course is why he'll do it).

Pandemics are when you should be firm and Presidential, incoherent bluster is neither.

Is anyone else a little concerned going into the debates? Biden's lead in some battleground states has begun to shrink a bit, and many do think that Trump will come out on top during them.

I'm not. Trump is a worse debater and he's played himself by constantly accusing Biden of senility.

Also, the polling situation has been greatly exaggerated by ignorant/bad faith actors.
