Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

'already breaking blue', not 'almost breaking blue'. As in, you could lose them, but they have a blue history and are polling blue for now. I was specifically thinking of the so-called 'Midwestern Blue Firewall' that collapsed in 2016.

I misread you.
Then no, I don't agree. The midwest matters but it's shortsighted to ignore the benefits of expanding into new states, particularly considering that Georgia has two Senate seats up for grabs.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangDuring the presidential election, possibly. The state was only +9 for Trump in 2016, which was the lowest of any Republican presidential candidate since the 1980 election when Texas started going consistently for Republicans.
For state elections and local elections in Republican strongholds? Unlikely.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."My big worry with Georgia is that all indicator are that Kemp won't allow democrats to win the state, it doesn't matter what the Dems do, all Republicans have to do is be ahead at one point on election night and Kemp will pull a Jeb Bush and order them to stop counting.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's not just about the presidency. There are a lot of US and state House pickup opportunities that are important long-term. Of course, he shouldn't be making a play for Texas if it takes money away from the Midwest, but Biden pulled in $365 million in August. There's enough to go around. (Same goes for Georgia, even with Kemp.)

Arizona for all intent and purpose is already a swing state. It's always mentioned in the same breathe as Florida and Michigan these days. Georgia and Texas are different matters in that they would be huge game changers in the future. Biden probably don't need them to win right now, but only in the sense that if he's winning Texas then he's almost for sure won all the swing states he already needs to get passed the goal post.
So it looks like the Trump camp is getting ready to unload big time on Harris.

What possible outcomes do you think this could have, if any?
There won’t be any impact. Anyone who would buy anything they say is already on their side.
The Atlantic's Editor-in-Chief says that the reporting about Trump disparaging fallen and wounding soldiers is just the tip of the iceberg.

A minor consequence of all this is that this has perhaps killed the conspiracy genre where revealing the villains evil plan to the public has any effect. It's hard to believe there's anything that can be revealed about Trump now that would affect anyone's vote.

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThe Draft was horrible as time went by, but Donald Trump wasn't a good faith Draft Dodger, so fuck him anyway.
