Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm actually left a bit speechless for once. I mean, I thought Trump couldn't do anything to make me respect him less, but he went and did it.
Leviticus 19:34This is a man who spread a racist conspiracy theory about Obama's citizenship and ran for President for a chance to destroy Obama's legacy just because Obama roasted him once over said conspiracy theory.
Something like this would be entirely in character.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump tweeted he was working on a "big surprise" for the 2012 RNC, which Salon writer Alex Pareene guessed was "almost definitely just going to be some idiotic video where Trump 'fires' an Obama impersonator."
Naturally, Trump then specifically targeted Pareene on Twitter. The "surprise" was ultimately cancelled due a to convention scheduling shift.
In fact, the video exists, obtained by Breitbart years ago.

I don't think it's that weird, it's just a goofy attack ad where the host of the Apprentice symbolically "fires" the sitting president of the United States. There have been thousands of way dumber political cartoons published, so something like this doesn't sound at all unreasonable.
If anything, the weirdest part of the story is that Trump decided not to publish it.
Clint Eastwood spent several minutes yelling at an empty chair. This is Obama Derangement Syndrome.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Conservatives did suffer from Obama Derangement Syndrome during his time in office, this action by Trump is not surprising:

There will be two open spots in House Democratic leadership in the next Congress.
- Assistant Speaker
- #4 Democrat, behind Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer, and Majority Whip Clyburn
- Current holder Rep. Ben Ray Lujan is (likely) moving to the Senate
- David Cicilline (RI-1), Tony Cardenas (CA-29) have both declared they are running for the position, while Katherine Clark (MA-5) is likely to but hasn't made an official announcement yet.
- Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee
- Current Chair Eliot Engel lost his primary
- Brad Sherman (CA-30), Gregory Meeks (NY-5), Joaquin Castro (TX-20) have announced their candidacies.
- There is a Roll Call article
that goes into each Representative's foreign policy positions/priorities; I don't really know enough to comment.
I'm not especially surprised by Arizona, it's practically a purple state. But it would be amazing if Georgia goes blue, my joy would be unending.
I'm not really expecting anything to happen in Texas and thus I'm going to avoid getting invested in the idea of it flipping.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangBiden probably has the money to spend after that enormous August haul. Taking the Texas State House would do wonders for redistricting, even if neither Biden nor MJ Hegar win their respective races. Arizona was already looking pretty doable on all levels this year, and of course Georgia has its two Senate races.
Edit: Point being that if he has the money and he's shored up the Midwest Blue Wall, this is a good investment.

Just as long as they don't take their eyes off the ball on the swing-y states that are already breaking blue, as seemed to happen four years ago. I assume his team have taken that particular object lesson to heart.
In other words, pretty much agreeing with your edit.

Although it can be permissible to encourage employees to make donations, reimbursing them for those contributions is a violation of North Carolina and federal election laws. Known as a straw-donor scheme, the practice allows donors to evade individual contribution limits and obscures the true source of money used to influence elections.
Such federal violations carry a five-year statute of limitations. There is no statute of limitations in North Carolina for felonies, including campaign finance violations.
Facebook is doing more fact checking, but when you refuse to fact check this particular sitting president, you have a real problem on your hands.
They also won't accept new ads before the election, but old ads are allowed to stay on, factual or not.
And of course a big problem is that Facebook tends to be reactive, rather than proactive, and slow about it at that.
Facebook, however, has a record of failing to act against violent threats until it's too late. The company cracked down on Q Anon about two weeks ago, removing thousands of Facebook and Instagram groups, pages, and accounts.
As The Verge's Casey Newton pointed out, that's probably already too little, too late.
"On its face, [Q Anon] seems no less a joke than the idea that Tide Pods secretly taste delicious," Newton wrote. "But as with the laundry detergent, thousands of Americans have now been poisoned by Q Anon, and the consequences seem likely to be far more dire, and long-lasting."
The "me" in question is Timothy Lee of Ars Technica.
More unexpected and damaging consequences from the trade war. Another example of why a trade war can damage your own side just as badly as the other side.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesJust as long as they don't take their eyes off the ball on the swing-y states that are already breaking blue, as seemed to happen four years ago. I assume his team have taken that particular object lesson to heart.
I agree they shouldn't ignore battleground states but I think it's worth pointing out that "swingy states that are almost breaking blue" perfectly describes Arizona and Georgia.
