The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] You think I haven't been saying that since the debates started? It'll be a doozy to reverse this

Well who knows, maybe the populace will finally with the Dems making no decisions, finally hold the GOP accountable.

Some relieving news (I hope it stays this way).

Republican obstruction might do some good. Grand Bargain is increasingly unlikely according to McConnel.

I would go even further and say it's terrorism.

Here's one of the definitions: "The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes."

It's not terrorism you ninnies.

It's extortion. Or blackmail-though, "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word.

[up] Why not? Everything else is terrorism. tongue

I do agree that sort of thing should be considered voter intimidation. I know that if a company made the same threats about Romney getting in, there'd be a lot of squawking from the right.

It's technically voter persuasion. Saying that the election will decide the future of the company the sounds like speaking for its protection.

Are you sure it's not terrorism Tomu? I know the term isn't generally applied to this sort of thing but it's not like you have to do some rationalizing to make it fit the definition.

Y'all are being silly. These people are saying "if Obama is reelected, our businesses will be harmed" and they are emphasizing the fact that if their businesses are harmed, everyone involved will be harmed, not just the fat cat owners. They aren't "threatening" anyone.

They obviously have an incentive to play up the harm their employees will suffer and downplay the harm they will suffer, because the public has this mentality of "serves the rich *****s right" towards anything that harms the wealthy.

[up][up] No kidding. there's been experiments that prove richer people are (surprise surprise) greedier, less likely to return extra change, ruder in general, ect.

I mean, Steve jobs used to take up handicap spots AT HIS OWN BUILDING. wtf man. wtf.

[up] Look at it this way. They lay off workers WHILE THEY keep high salaries that allow them to afford jets. that's screwed up.

I'm not saying they should't get the jets if they earn the money, but they should be putting their workers first.

To determine whether this is voter intimidation, you need to look at motive.

Scenario 1: The guys in charge of the company were thinking, "We don't want Obama to get reelected, so we'll tell our employees that we'll fire a bunch of them if he gets a second term. That'll scare folks out of voting for him."

Status: Illegal

Scenario 2: They were thinking, "Obama getting reelected could hurt our profits and force us to fire a lot of people. We should probably give our employees a heads up about that."

Status: Legal

Part of the typical definition of terrorism is the use of violence or threat of violence (in pursuit of a political end goal). This involves neither, though I do think it's ethics are questionable.

Terrorism is the consistent use of terror as a form of coercion. This is an individual example of extortion.

They're crying that their businesses will be harmed with no evidence at all.

The first guy who warned of layoffs admitted that business was good under Obama. “the economy doesn’t currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration.”

@Raven: I'm sorry, I just don't think that any company should have the right to tell me who to vote for. Besides, the first one is also legal thanks to Citizens United.

[up][up] Yeah, that's not leaving a whole lot of doubt in regards to motive.

[up] Again, it's only illegal if telling people who to vote for was their intent. If they came to the decision that "Obama reelection = layoffs" without thinking about how such a decision would affect their employees' voting behavior, then it wouldn't count as voter intimidation (though, as I mention above, that scenario seems quite unlikely).

Exactly what part of president Obama's first term has harmed corporate profits so badly to justify a forecast of laying off bundles of employees as not just possible, but a certainty should he get a second term? Where's the cause and effect to show that this isn't just empty bluster, like the earlier link about the wannabe Versailles palace asshole who said he'd 'have' to fire a bunch of employees if he had ANY new taxes, period?

Because I don't see it. It looks like the economic equivalent of the 'thousand years of darkness' commercial to me.

And for that matter, where is the proof that the alternative, Mitt Romney's eternally vague 'cut taxes on the wealthy now, we'll figure out the rest of it later' plan, would be BETTER for businesses?

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
