Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's honest reasons to criticize Obama's War on Terror continuation and policies of assisting Saudi Arabia in their unjustified war against Yemen. Not to mention his policy of continuing escalation of undeclared war as well as use of drone strikes for extrajudicial killings.
However, it's silly to complain about that when democracy is on fire now.

I think Trump and much of his base is driven insane by the existence of a black President and wish they could erase it completely. The Nobel Peace Prize is another thing that underscores Trump's inferiority.
Effectively the award of, "Thank you for nonviolently removing Dubya."
Sadly, it was premature for saving America.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Not sure if Though Slime(guy on video) is Leninist, but he IS very left leaning and his video got a lot of traction of RESETERA'S Red Thread(thread dedicated to Socialism, Communism, Leninism, Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, and Anarchy as well I think). As an aside, no not everyone on the site is on board with them at all and quite a few people on the politics thread are feeling good about Biden and Harris and share a lot of really good info. I don't put a lot of thought into that shit, but my question is why should I discard it or why is he wrong? There's been a larger uptick it feels like on things of this nature that I'm unfamiliar with and have lots of questions on and need clarification.
Well, the most important factor is that Obama was around the most progressive politician the electorate would possibly allow in the executive branch. Fielding a more progressive candidate would have ended up with a net loss for progressive politics.
My musician pageA rather ironic position given that Obama was elected for being progressive than his opponent: Hillary Clinton.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. This is local politics, but I wonder how much of a microcosm it is for minority representation in government around the country: ‘These two will make that noise’: Springfield’s election of Adam Gomez, Orlando Ramos to state House and Senate more than 30 years in the making
A sample:
Checking Wikipedia, Springfield has had a sizable Latinx population since at least 1990, and as of 2010 the Latinx population was a higher percentage than the non-Hispanic white population. And it's taken this long for a Latinx person to get that state senate seat.
A possibly related point, but turnout was huge this year, more than double the usual. I wouldn't be surprised if it's because of the expanded mail-in voting option.
You’ve not described what (if any) argument the video is making, so we can’t try and refute it. “Obama is a monster” isn’t an argument based in fact, it’s an emotionally based declaration.
If it’s arguing that Obama did bad things then it’s not wrong, it’s just not of particular relevance.
We can’t refute or agree with the video’s argument unless you explain it, that’s why we have rules against just dumping videos/links and expecting people to argue/refute them.

Sorry.
Basically the banking bailout, drone STRIKES being overused until an article from the Intercept, ICE detainments and deportations, his shifting on gay marriage seemingly being less about morality and instead on what would give him more power, and us being in this current mess due to decisions he made. That's about the cliff notes of it.
Edit: To quote him
"It should be clear that this is not a man to be celebrated. He is a mass murdering wall street crony whose best accomplishments were either luck or desperate attempts to forestall something better happening... "

Thought Slime is an Anarchist, not a Leninist. He is still very left wing and you can argue that title was deliberately hyperbolic. I like his content, but he is not perfect and he seems to get into with other leftist like Vaush (Vaush is another anachist, but he is closer to my politics than Thought Slime, I do think his videoes are interesting). I consider myself a Market Socialist at this point.
Thought Slime is more of a revolutionary leftist compared to others I know of like Vaush or Robert Evans who are still leftist, but somewhat more pragmatic.
He is not private US citizen, he is actually Canadian. But he does call out other leftists he doesn't like, like a British Communist who tried to use Historical Materialism to justify transphobia.
I do think a lot of criticism of Obama is valid though, I thought the change Obama would have brought was rolling back the surveillance state Bush created and he went in the opposite direction and the increase in drone strikes is the opposite of the military drawback I wanted to see. Not mention not charging the people behind the 2008 crash.
Yes Trump is worse than Obama, but why did Trumpism come about? I think part of its a racist reaction to Obama, but I think Obama not delivering on change is part of it.

I saw the video now. In terms of foreign policy, he is actually quite accurate. And in terms of detainment and deportation, he at least acknowledges that Trump infinitely worsened the problem.
The overall issue with the video is the extremely populist take. Some of the points are good, but he is more than hellbent to paint a negative picture.

Some, but not all, felons win back the right to vote in NC 2020 elections
North Carolina's Superior Court issued a preliminary injunction allowing some felons on probation or parole to vote in the November elections. They accepted the poll tax argument that was made against the Florida Amendment 4 case (which is being heard by the 11th Circuit Court).
The judges didn't extend voting rights to everyone on probation or parole for a felony, as the challengers including Durham's Community Success Initiative had asked. But they did rule in favor of people who would have already finished their time under supervision, except for not paying court costs and fees.
...
The challengers had originally said that if they were to win this lawsuit, it would open up voting rights to around 60,000 North Carolinians.
However, with this more limited ruling, it wasn't immediately clear how many people with felony records would get back their voting rights.
The GOP state party chair responded by calling for the election of more conservative judges.
@ Forenperser, Thought Slime is a revolutionary anarchist, so that would he his approach.
Of the Breadtube community (a collection of leftist content makers) he would be the one of the furthest left. But I think Breadtube is very left wing populist and doesn't care much for Obama.
I like Breadtube overall, but someone like Sam Seder and the Majority Report is a better gateway to it.

Drone strikes and ICE are totally valid places to point out Obama’s failure, I’m really curious as to how shifting on gay marriage supposedly gave Obama more power. As for the current mess being his fault, that depends heavily on what one considers the causes of the current mess. Trump’s rise to power has a lot to do with racist reaction to the success of a black man, it would be deeply problematic to blame Obama for the fact that racists threw their toys out the pram in reaction to him.
As for the banking bailout, what’s the complaint there? That bailouts happened at all? That the bailouts didn’t have strings/result in semi-nationalisation, that the bailouts weren’t paired with criminal prosecutions?
Okay that’s a simple answer, you can ignore them because they have no understanding of US politics.
Obama’s best accomplishments are things that have laid the groundwork for better policies in the future (many better policies are now part of Biden’s platform), Obama didn’t block any “better” alternatives, in fact many of his better ideas were blocked by the more conservative Democrats/Independents (that’s why there’s no public opinion in Obamacare).
The idea that Obama improving things somehow forestalled better things sounds like Accelerationism, a call for things to be allowed to remain bad because that will radicalise people towards your ideology, the Communists in post-WW 1 Germany used that idea to justify allying with the Nazis against the Socialists, they believed that “After Hitler, us”.

You shouldn't get anything from CNN but the actual news.
As for where to get one's political views...don't rely on anyone else to tell you what you should think. Focus on getting actual accurate information and draw your own views from that.
Especially don't rely on social media, where a big part of their model relies on prioritizing views over everything else. It's everything wrong with mainstream media's reliance on ratings taken Up To Eleven.
