Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Perhaps "ironic" was not the right word. Still, I'd like to see him get what he wished for in the wrong way. Something like actual hate speech laws.
My musician pageAlso, if Trump weakens free speech laws then you can bet it's going to be so he can make the press compliant. If he has the opportunity to do that it's unlikely going to be good for anyone else.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI know it's not gonna happen. It'd just be nice to live in a world where the good guys weren't Lawful Stupid at best.
Of course, I would not want the changes to happen during his term.

My musician pageTrump is not a psychological anomaly to be singled out.
He is the result of decades' worth of jingoism, cult of ignorance, and feckless capitalism festering in cultural and socioeconomical islets, deliberately manufactured by political interests. He is a perfectly functional (and well-doing) member of a society that was built around idealizing people like him. The fact he is absolutely imbecilic on his own and that the sole reason for his success is inheritance is part of this: despite his many, many, many faults, he has so many social and legal safety nets (due to inherited money he doesn't even know how to manage on his own) that at this point, we cannot call him insane.
He needs to be put in prison, not an asylum. The legal system and the cultural niche he lives in allows him to be a perfectly functional criminal - if not a heroic one.
Psychologically we can call him a few things: A narcissist would fit the bill the most, probably. But this serves little purpose for the rest of us (besides one of karmic sense).
The reason why I bother pointing all this out is that the difference between an anomaly and the result of a system, is that the former will let you chuck im in prison or an asylum, put him away dust your hands and say "Problem solved". Whereas the second is a tad more terrifying, but it also helps explain the rise of other groups to political notice (Conspiracy theorists, Truthers, Q Anon, The Alt Right, Literal Neo Nazis...) and lets you formulate thoughts on how to combat them.
Forgive me the Jokeresque but, we do live in a society.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes
Well, considering that "Arkham" serves as both Asylum/prison in the Batman-verse, I only said it due to the padded cells would prevent him from doing something even dumber just to escape the punishment.
An insane system on the other hand, needs a complete overhaul and the removal of ALL that takes advantage of it for selfish purposes (GOP) before it can be reformed to serve society as intended from the start.
Your point was still wrong, Trump is not insane. He is not mentally ill, he is exactly what plutocratic white supremacy seeks to create in its elites. Any argument to the contrary critically misunderstands the ideology that supports him, and risks stigmatizing the mentally ill.
It's... not the best.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang
As far as I see it, "insanity" has lost all its original meaning and value due to being overused to the point of blatant misconception and normalcy of the word when used.
Just like everything else in this Trump Presidency.
Such as "consequences", "common sense", "oversight", "moral outrage", "karma", "law and order", "accountability", "traitor", "lies", "corruption", "cruelty", "criminality", and the like.
Because if the Trump Presidency isn't described with sheer "insanity", then that would mean that it has been "normalized", which is far, far, worse than that, as it would make people lose the values of what is common decency in this country.
Consider that as well with the point I was trying to make here.
...
And now Trump is taking the full credit for John Mc Cain's veterans bill as well...
The shamelessness of this "man" (slime more fittingly) is unbelievable.
Whether you like it or not, words have meaning. Trump isn’t insane, he isn’t a traitor, and he’s certainly not the cause of all our problems. He’s the obvious culmination of decades of work by the Republicans, who have been steadily undermining democracy and eroding the public discourse since forever.

Now that's unfair - there are heroic slimes, after all.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Yeah while you can say that Trump’s presidency has been an insane time/series of events, he is not himself an insane person.
I’d be willing to argue in favour of traitor being a correct term though.

It predates the Tea Party, Trump is (hopefully) the culmination of a move that started with Goldwater, Nixon and Reagan.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThey’ve managed to ensure that the bit they disliked about Watergate (public pressure building to the point where Nixon had to resign), hasn’t happened again, that’s why Fox was established.

Marjorie Taylor Greene posts image of herself with gun alongside 'Squad' congresswomen, encourages going on the 'offense against these socialists'
Republican congressional candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday posted on her candidate Facebook page an image of herself holding a gun alongside images of Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib and encouraged going on the "offense against these socialists."
"We need strong conservative Christians to go on the offense against these socialists who want to rip our country apart," her post's caption read.
Can the House refuse to seat her? This person is literally threatening her future colleagues.
Is she one of the Q Anon simps?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesShe is the QAnon candidate who believes in almost every racist conspiracy theory out there.
Edit: There are other QAnon candidates, but most of them are running in deep blue districts where they have no chance of winning. Marjorie Greene and Lauren Boebert are the only ones who are likely to be going to Congress (the fact that there is even one is horrifying).

It takes a two-thirds majority to expel a member from the house. They only don’t get seated if their state elections body refuses to certify the results (as happened with the Republican who committed election fraud).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranCould we please avoid this one though? It is very male centric and carrys the implication that sex is a demeaning experiance for women, and while I have not heard the whole thing based on context I assume gay men to...
Like when your growing up and taught that you should be ashamed of your sexuality and that you should strive to remain pure... things like this really don't help shake those bonds that exist to control you.
Err, sorry for saying any thing especialy this late.. its just this is one of those things that goes beyond crude and into problematic that I am willing to bet people without particular life experiences (growing up in a conservitive nation as a woman) dont even think of....

Ironic how much Trump fights freedom of press, considering how much he benefits from certain groups saying whatever he wants them to, and which would be in violation of laws in effect in other countries.
