Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

From The Hill article I posted earlier:
President Trump on Wednesday suggested supporters in North Carolina should illegally attempt to vote both by mail and in-person, saying doing so would test the integrity of the system.
It's terrible how Republicans try to break government to show that government is broken.

Pelosi has a hand in making federal laws, so it's reasonable for her to know what the federal guidelines and restrictions are. But since AFAIK what the rules are for hair salons is decided on the state level for whatever state the salon was in, it's way more reasonable for her not to know what is or isn't breaking the rules.
I'd guess that most customers assume that whatever business they're patronizing knows what the rules for them are and is enforcing them, and most reasonable customers would do whatever the employee said, knowing that the employee knows what the legal and personal boundaries are. In short, this sounds like the salon was deliberately violating the rules to trick a politically important customer into unknowingly breaking them, and all the legal consequences should fall on the owner/manager.
Multiple post-convention polls show Biden continuing to lead Trump.
While swing state polls are tighter, it looks like Trump's attempt to demonize Biden as a crime loving radical socialist is falling flat on most people.
I'm partially keeping an eye on this 'cause on how the Democrats would "engage" China and North Korea. Some of the video analysis I'm seeing lately (in terms of being anti-CCP/DPRK) is that it's either Republicans are good in keeping up the pressure on them or the Democrats have a platform... Hope they walk the walk.

Reuters:
Biden garners more Republican endorsements, this time from ex-governors
The latest Republican-led effort to oppose the re-election of President Donald Trump also includes current and former Republicans in the key battleground state of Michigan that will help decide the outcome of the Nov. 3 election, the group's members said.
The Hill:
Trump campaign sues Montana governor over mail-in ballot directive
The suit, filed by Trump's campaign in the U.S. District Court in Helena on Wednesday, the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Montana Republican State Central Committee, argues Bullock's directive is an illegal "power grab" by the Democratic governor, who is also running for Senate in November's election.

Technically, Congress can override state laws on federal elections (Article 1, Section 4, Clause 1) but, yeah, this sounds like something that would be argued in state court first.

Trump is still more or less providing his voting base with what they want so it shouldn't be too outlandish that his support is holding strong. Not to mention a well funded and pervasive alternative information network can keep people from seeing any of his supposed bad stuff.
The conditions are not unfavorable for Trump to barely hold on or for him and his allies to try to force the election in his favor. And no matter what happens we should be ready for possible "Years of Lead" regardless of who gets elected.
A thing worth being aware of: There appears to be a significant partisan gap in people planning to vote by mail this year. So there is a strong possibly that the votes counted on election night will show a significantly more pro-Trump outcome than the final tally.
When combined with Trump's ongoing attempts to sabotage and delegitimatize mail-in voting, that could make things get ugly, even if Biden wins by a huge margin.

The problem is that following the Republican lead in regards to China and North Korea is insane. Not only are they Climate Change denialists and thus their foreign policy should be intrinsically tainted to rational people but their efforts have accomplished nothing. The trade war? A disaster that has hurt our economy for no benefit. North Korea? Even more pointless.
Republican pressure is terrible, I deeply hope Democrats don't emulate them.

Because his supporters don't care about that sort of thing, they just want Trump in power no matter the cost.
Not to mention they think Democrats do the same thing as well in what could only be described as blatant projection.

I'm not sure if the Democrats have much of a choice considering China has been leaning Nationalistic for awhile now, as well as the more legitimate suspicion that American detente will not last if a Republican gets in power again.
We may just have to get used to treating China as a political enemy from now on.

x4 Also, it wouldn't matter even if Trump weren't President or a Major Presidential Candidate; Most criminals, even behind bars (theoretically), can run for President, as long as they're a natural born citizen over the age of 35 who has lived in the United States for 14 years. The only crimes that bar a person that meets the qualifications are: a crime that has led to a successful Impeachment and Disbarment, and Active Rebellion Conviction against the United States that isn't over-ridden by 2/3rds of both Chambers of Congress.

On the topic of Trump and crimes... Let's say that Trump loses the re-election, and then gets arrested in January for crimes he's committed, say tax fraud, for example. Where would Trump reside until the court proceedings were concluded, which would likely take years and years? Would there be a security detail following him everywhere he goes to make sure he doesn't flee the country? Where could he actually go?

No, nothing about China's nationalism forces us to pursue the myopic and irrational path of pursuing geopolitical rivalry at the expense of fighting the far more serious threat of Climate Change.
Democrats can cowardly capitulate to the current political trend and let the Right set the tone again or they can show leadership and take us down a new path. I would vastly prefer the latter but I'm not particularly optimistic.

So Trump’s recent call for republicans in North Carolina to vote twice likely constitutes a criminal offence, as NC has a Democrat AG he could end up facing criminal charges there should he loose in November.
Letting the states lock Trump up would enable a Biden government to dodge the issue while still ensuring Trump faces justice.
