Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Let’s be honest: some of the deaths would have brought it on themselves even without the GOP doing anything.
I still remember that when Trump first took office there were people hoping that he'd somehow mature and take the job seriously. I sympathized with that wishful thinking, but I also felt it wasn't going to happen.
If anything, he's gotten worse. He's become even less mature and even more of a selfish overgrown brat.
Disgusted, but not surprisedBut that would have required Donald Trump to, well, not be Donald Trump.
It was entirely predictable that Trump would mess up the pandemic response badly and that it would cause horrific damage to the USA. We all knew that Trump would be worse than useless in the face of a genuine crisis.
Agreed. Pandemic response need not be inherently partisan, and Trump's lack of an approval rating boost is very unusual when compared with other leaders, both at the state level and around the world, and shows that his handling it is unusually incompetant.
Heck, the very Republican Ohio governor at one point at least had a higher approval rating among Democrats (81%) then Republicans (76%), which can pretty much be attributed solely to his pandemic response. If he was up for reelection this year, he might win in a landslide even if no Republicans voted. Which is completely bonkers given that he, like I said, is very Republican politically.

Really the fact they made this a political issue so to not do stuff like wear a mask is a humongous strike against them.
Like its a fucking a virus, it doesn't care if your read, blue, rich, poor, it will kill indiscriminately because again it does not give a flying fuck.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Actually people of color and poor people have disproportionally high numbers of cases.
So this is very much a "not my problem" kind of thing for the Republicans.

I remember that Trump and the Republican machine outright promoted the idea that the Coronavirus was in essence a democratic hoax. The pandemic "not being political" is a ship that sailed long ago.

Louisiana's U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins says he'd shoot armed protesters in Facebook post
As Lafayette residents protest the police killing of a Black man, former deputy and U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins threatened to shoot armed protesters in a social media post that included a picture of Black militia members.
Higgins, the former St. Landry Parish deputy whose congressional district includes Lafayette, posted the threat on Facebook on Tuesday night as protesters gathered outside a council meeting in Lafayette. Facebook later removed the post.
In the post, which featured a picture of armed Black militia members from a Louisville protest, Higgins said if armed protesters showed up, they would be considered a "real threat" in Louisiana.
"Me? I wouldn't even spill my beer. I'd drop any 10 of you where you stand,' Higgins wrote. "We don't care what color you are. We don't care if you're left or right. If you show up like this, if we recognize threat...you won't walk away."
He's one of those Republicans that talks about "protecting our Second Amendment rights" a lot.
Edit: He also conveniently used a picture of Black militia members in Louisville, KY, than the white militia/far-right groups that came out in his home state of Louisiana.

Republicans about carrying firearms: The right to bear arms shall not be infringed!
Republicans when black people carry firearms: A gun is inherently a threatening object, protestors shouldn't carry them.
It's "nice" to see that Republicans haven't changed since Reagan.
At this point, is it fair to say that as it stands today, Republicans are inherently morally bankrupt?
Exceedingly fair. If any Republican truly had decent principles then they wouldn't be a member of the party. Romney bent the knee, Mc Cain voted with Trump most of the time.
They're profoundly immoral.

Something's rotten in the state of California
. Apparently someone did try to frame Nancy Pelosi for violating COVID-19 rules?
If Rep. Pelosi was the only customer in the salon at the time, I can see why she'd think it'd be okay to lower her mask while her hair was being washed.
(That said, I'd object to the idea that you need to take off your mask while getting your hair washed. I keep my mask on while the stylist washes my hair in preparation for a haircut - it's not that uncomfortable)

Disgusted, but not surprisedPelosi seems to have erroneously trusted that the salon which she regularly frequented would be following regulations. In hindsight she should have checked the regulations herself to see if the salon was in fact following the rules.
The stylist who actually did her hair is claiming that the salon owner set up Pelosi since she mistakenly believed Pelosi was the one responsible for the regulations.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, that's what makes it extra weird. Pelosi trusted her stylist who either trusted the salon or was complicit in it, and the salon owner put this to use for political gain.
So technically Pelosi is in the wrong but it's more of a "a politician should know to check the rules themselves" sense than anything.
And of course the most maddening thing about this "scandal" is that one mistake like this (completely aside from whether it was genuine or a set-up) is nothing compared to the hypocrisy of the countless Republican lawmakers (not to mention donors and voters) going maskless/not doing social distancing at the White House RNC event, speeches, and other gatherings. Double Standard, thy name is Rethuglican.

They are a bunch of horrible parasites and every single person that has died due to co-vid whether directly or indirectly is 100% their fault.
