Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Watch SymphogearAlready saw some people trot out the old "just a joke" excuse again - only for others to point out that Huckabee-Sanders was clearly uncomfortable, so "just a joke" doesn't cut it in any case.
You know, if everything Trump says is "just a joke", he shouldn't be president - he should be a third-grade comedian who complains on social media that society doesn't laugh at his shitty jokes.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyThe fact that Markey got the label of being a progressive darling despite voting for Iraq, NAFTA, Crime Bill, etc amongst other things certain progressive types despised other politicians for is completely bizarre to me, and shows to me the movement among those in that particular sector of the party is basically vapid, unserious, and most of all, performative with no unifying consistent principles, other than their perceived notions of an enemy.
Yes, someone doesn't look progressive if you willfully ignore the ways that they're progressive. The only vapid thing is this "analysis", Markey has a long history of pushing progressive policies, that he had questionable votes is just evidence that he was imperfect and that his supporters don't engage in purity politics.
Yes, Kennedy had very similar policies. But that's not a reason to accept him, he arrogantly rushed ahead to challenge a Senator who was going to retire anyway. It's pure hubris and no one has any obligation to respect that. If he had done the sensible, non-hubristic, thing and chosen to just wait and run later then the reaction would be very different.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHonestly the interesting thing to me is learning that insulting the Kennedys, or appearing to, seems to be a Berserk Button for Pelosi.
Yeah, and it doesn't seem to have been a "moderates vs progressives" thing either. Markey was endorsed by Schumer and Joe Manchin.
It seems to have been a bizarre fight between House and Senate Democrats about the former trying to promote one of their own and the latter protecting theirs.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSchumer's endorsement makes a lot of sense, its his job to defends his caucus (unless one of them totally steps out of line).
And as for Pelosi, I suspect it was partially out of powermongering, and partially out of her nostalgia (as an establishment figure who cut her teeth in the 60s and 70s) for the Kennedy dynasty overwhelming her sense. The former in particular is strange, as she's committed to stepping down as Speaker (and likely leaving electoral politics) in 2022... unless she wants somewhat like minded Senators in place after she's gone...?
I don't get her reasoning, TBH.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's somewhat understandable, but I wish she would've exercised more awareness of how it would look to outside observers. Pointlessly stoking moderate vs progressive aggrievement is a terrible unforced error.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI grew up in Kennedy country, surrounded by Irish Catholics, and from a family who was able to come to the US due to the Kennedies' efforts in helping get the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 passed.
Being second generation and thus a little distanced from those events allows me to be more critical of the Kennedies, but nevertheless I understand why certain demographics might worship them.
I know that RFK Jr. is an anti-vaxer. Wouldn't be totally surprised if he moved on to those other conspiracy theories.
What's kind of "funny" is that he was a very respected environmental lawyer/ environmental activist.
So, I kind of assume it's a similar case as Ben Carson with someone wrongfully assuming that their expertise in one area of science carries over to other areas of science.
Then what does that make FDR?
The figure the party repudiated under Clinton. Sadly he has not had anything close to the same level of influence for the Democrats as Reagan does for the Republicans.

Yeah, see, it's okay to kill people without due process, but stealing money? This is completely out of line.
