Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because they're sociopaths.
If only, sociopaths aren't a large enough portion of the population to be a political threat. No, they're just infested with toxic social views.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTo follow up about the MA question, I don't know whether it has any bearing on why the National Guard was activated (probably not?), but I found there was an anti-vaxx protest at the State House to protest the fact that school kids will be required to get flu shots this year. pictures here
So many without masks, one caption shows two people hugging 'at the urging of a speaker', and so much right-wing nonsense.
Ugh.
@Spooky Mask You're probably thinking more like autism. Though this depends on how 'empathy' is defined. In the case of sociopathy, they lack empathy in the sense that they wouldn't necessarily cringe at the sight of a male accidentally injuring their balls. They also tend to have poor impulse control and are easily bored.
To my understanding (and I could be 100% wrong about this), Haruhi Suzamiya is akin to how sociopaths tend to act. They can be very good at manipulating others (and it's not too uncommon for them to be abusive). Having said that, contrary to popular portrayals, sociopaths tend to have slightly-lower-than-average I Qs and are self-destructively impulsive rather than chessmasters.
Having said that, extreme evil and sociopathy have much less overlap than one might expect. For example, among Hitler's inner circle, only one guy was a diagnosed sociopath, IIRC that guy admitted he never really cared at all about Nazi ideology, he was just in it for himself.
Leviticus 19:34A funny study by a doctor discovered a much larger portion of the population are PSYCHO-paths (versus sociopaths) than anyone ever imagined. The doctor also found out that it included him. Most of them aren't murderers or evil, just incredibly rude people.
I know a couple in RL. Both of them are very interesting conversationalists but decent blokes.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I think the real problem is how society rewards the negative traits of pscyho- and sociopathy.
My musician pageNot sure of it's clinically correct but I still like this definition I read a long time ago:
Psychopaths are incapable of distinguishing reality from fantasy. Sociopaths can, they just don't care. So The Joker would be a psychopath while Lex Luthor would be a sociopath.

Trump delenda estApparently, Bill Maher is feeling as nervous as he felt in 2016 after the RNC.
I don't really know much about him, so I want to hear your thoughts on this.
I mostly know him as a super left-yet-anti-Muslim pundit who used to host Politically Incorrect.
Beyond that, I don't think he's wellr egarded or taken very seriously in these parts.
He's a liberal (his words) talking head, but critical of "political correctness" also afair an anti-vaxxer. Basically if there was a Liberal Fox News, he'd be on their posters.
My guess is that this is less hard political analysis and more controversy mongering to raise profile.

"You can reply to this Message!"The deadly violence we saw overnight in Portland is unacceptable. Shooting in the streets of a great American city is unacceptable. I condemn this violence unequivocally. I condemn violence of every kind by any one, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same. It does not matter if you find the political views of your opponents abhorrent, any loss of life is a tragedy. Today there is another family grieving in America, and Jill and I offer our deepest condolences.
We must not become a country at war with ourselves. A country that accepts the killing of fellow Americans who do not agree with you. A country that vows vengeance toward one another. But that is the America that President Trump wants us to be, the America he believes we are.
As a country, we must condemn the incitement of hate and resentment that led to this deadly clash. It is not a peaceful protest when you go out spoiling for a fight. What does President Trump think will happen when he continues to insist on fanning the flames of hate and division in our society and using the politics of fear to whip up his supporters? He is recklessly encouraging violence. He may believe tweeting about law and order makes him strong – but his failure to call on his supporters to stop seeking conflict shows just how weak he is. He may think that war in our streets is good for his reelection chances, but that is not presidential leadership–or even basic human compassion.
The job of a President is to lower the temperature. To bring people who disagree with one another together. To make life better for all Americans, not just those who agree with us, support us, or vote for us.
Donald Trump has been president for almost four years. The temperature in the country is higher, tensions run stronger, divisions run deeper. And all of us are less safe because Donald Trump can’t do the job of the American president.
And sort-of double-posting, but anyone ever heard of the People's Party? Well it's a movement for such a party. They want to be a third party made up of those who are a bit farther left-wing than even I am, those who are fed up with Democrats being so indecisive about the issues we have in this country. Anyway, they're doing a "People's Convention" on YouTube
right now. I'm not watching, but if anyone wants to check it out, please relay what you see and hear. Thanks.

I'm from MA, too. No idea what Baker is doing with the National Guard. There is literally an article on Boston.com/BostonGlobe.com right now with the title, 'Gov. Baker activates National Guard, doesn't give a reason'. :
"A statement released by Baker’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security said National Guard personnel would only be deployed if their presence was requested by municipal leaders. The office noted the role the National Guard has played in helping the state respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and cope with weather-related incidents like blizzards and tornadoes.
Baker’s office didn’t immediately respond Saturday to a request for comment."
