Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I can testify that it seems that Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) is rapidly becoming a favorite outlet for American liberals to be hosting and sharing "digital teach ins" with slideshows presenting condensed information about social justice topics.
Take @whydontwediscuss
, which was 106,000 followers despite having only 43 slideshows.
I recall way back it was said that the cops have more or less embraced their positions as the bad guys here, because people are going to think that anyway.
That they're the bad guys because they're doing bad things is the part that slips past them. That seems like a general issue with conservatives really - acting as if a complaint about them is unfounded but inevitable, and use that as an excuse to continue doing the behavior that got them called out in the first place.
They become Tautological Templars. Whatever they do can't be bad because it's them doing it.
x6 From the statement I saw on the topic, it sounds like they were arrested under suspicion of being agitators of some kind, due to the fact that they had containers of gasoline and riot gear in their vehicle.
The spokesperson for their organization said that the gear was for protection while working at protests and the gasoline was to run their generators. Seems like it would be pretty easy to confirm.
Also worth noting that US Marshals were present on scene during the arrests.

They should have sent a poet.sgamer: yeah, as someone who just past is tesis on that topic I can tell you there is a least three signs of polarization:
Maniquean narratives: good and evil, the parties and politcal actor become the the arbitraers of what is good behavor, for example is not a conservative party but THE stauncher defender of what is a good citizen, if a left party them it become they vanguard of worker and poor right all over the world, the point remains the sense: once you decide is you or bust, everyone else have to....well, bust.
Disregard for the process: when polarization set higher and higher, the process become more of a a tool to kept you in power or something bothersome to throw aside because they see themselves as the endgoal of democracy, or to put it in a better light: the republicant didnt chose party over country, they decide THE part is THE country, which is why they denied everything to obama in his last terms because as far they are concern, obama is everything wrong with the country.
Use and love of violence: with polarization violence become a thing for the party who engage it, usually in two variants: normalization of violence since the other side dosent really deserve anything as respect, at the same time violence is not normalize but also legitimize as requirement for future political actors, in a way to kept the spiral.
This things is why trump have such a loyal base, is not that half of the country are made of crazy cultist who will wither whatever storm trump bring on himself, is that he bring a constant state of polarization on them(which is why the rallies are necesary for him), that is why they see themselves as misunderstood while simultaniously relishing violence, as far they are concern, they are the ones pushing a nazi.

, but the reasoning makes it sound like a prelude to his defense at trial.
“This motion is based upon the files and records in this case, the Minnesota Statutes, the Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure, the United States and Minnesota Constitutions and upon such other and further points and authorities as may subsequently be presented to the Court,” his attorneys wrote.
And simultaneously, the defense for one of the other officers involved is seeking to get George Floyd's arrest history introduced into evidence.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Now Yahoo polls have Biden slipping to just 6 points.

FiveThirtyEight has Biden vs. Trump at 50.9 vs. 42.1
, i.e. a 8.8% Biden lead, which is pretty much where the race has been since early June.
Also, a different recent Yahoo/YouGov poll shows Biden up 11%.
That doesn't contradict their point about the averages, fixating on individual polls will always be a mistake.
Furthermore, convention bumps tend to be temporary. Clinton got a good bump after her convention and still lost.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangEven an average can be misleading, if most polls tend to skew one way rather than the other, the average will be either lower or higher than the actual number.
They don't call it lies, damned lies, and statistics for nothing.
Yes, but Five Thirty Eight tries to compensate for this. Anyway, it's still far better than looking at individual polls.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangStill, it does feel like there are a lot of polls that are saying he’s losing support. You can say “don’t take just one poll into account”, but people have been bringing up more than just one poll.
I’m hoping it’s just due to the RNC, and that things will turn around soon, but I don’t think it’s abnormal for people to worry.

Twitter has managed to step up to the bare minimum (or just beneath it) against Trump.
Anything but total loyalty to the Orange Furher is treason.
