The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Jim Gaffigan is one of my favorite comedians of all time. I've been to several of his shows in person and I've watched every bit of material he's released. I always got the impression he was fairly liberal, although he doesn't discuss politics directly in his work. The rant was unexpected but welcome.

Do not read if you want to actually try it.

it connects to the office of Trevor Noah and associates and sons, where you get an automatic message that tells you, it you are the president of the United States press one, and everyone else should press two. If you press two you get a reminder to check your voting registration and vote, but if you press one, you get a message from Trevor Noah himself about how Trump should really think about visiting Uganda, a beautiful country with a strong goat based economy, and most importantly, does not Extradite to the united states. If you press the wrong keys a few times, it assumes that you are the president of the United States and directs you to the first message.

Apologies if this has been posted here already, but 538 wrote an article talking about how democrats being much more likely to vote by mail may make for a weird election night. They claim that it could lead to ridiculous looking results like Trump winning certain states at first until all the mail-in ballots are counted which is why it's important not to panic when the initial results are coming in. It may take until mid november until all votes are counted. They also mention that Trump may try to claim an early victory based on these results and while it's unlikely the mail-in ballots will be just thrown out altogether it's not great that trump has repeatedly tried to undermine the postal service's credibility.

Which of course means needing to pivot as much to other methods of early voting as possible.

[up] Or showing up to your actual polling place, worst case scenario. Mine is right around the corner from where I live, and I'm heading there to vote to not only because getting an absentee ballot in SC is hard, but because I want to make sure Trump's little gremlin brown shirts aren't causing any mischief.

[up][up][up] Exactly, and expect Trump to make full use of this to declare victory, and to declare any subsequent changes to the results "fraud".

No matter how he would lose he'll declare it fraud.

As with so many of these discussions, worrying over what would cause Trump to declare fraud (or whatever) is missing the point. He'll find an excuse.

Not exactly. He tried to prove the popular vote was rigged. He had won solely through the electoral college, but that was not enough for him; he wanted to be able to say he won, period. Losing the popular vote gave his victory the stain of illegitimacy.

Trump is a sore winner. Who knows what he will do when he loses?

He sulks, lies, and then declares victory anyway.

I hold on to hope that whenthe secret service kicks him out of the White House, it will be in the hands of Mueller's agents with handcuffs ready. He all but stated that Trump couldn't be charged as long as he was president, but after that, he was free game.

If Trump is charged, I'll bet good money that it will be state charges related to his financial dealings.

He'll never face federal charges for his political offenses.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
