The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Be thankful the military for the most part despises Trump.

Trump is exactly the kind of politician that Big Boss woul despise.

Silas: There’s also unconventional stuff like LRADs and laser dazzlers, very few police officers would have the type of protective gear necessary to be safe from those. I know there was also talk in certain states of having the guard position armored vehicles between the crowd and the police to keep the two groups apart.

And you are correct in pointing out that most governors would be pretty reluctant to order that kind of action.

Open conflict between the guard and police isn’t a super realistic thing to worry about. Lone wolf violence from the right and a renewed crackdown from the feds as the election draws closer are more concerning.

I am kind of afraid of a huge outburst of right-wing violence if Biden wins

As opposed to a huge outburst of right-wing violence if Trump wins?

Considering how hate crimes apparently spiked after Trump got elected, there'll likely be violence regardless of who wins the election - the difference is that if Biden wins, at least the perpetrators won't have White House support anymore.

I'd assume because Trump said he was going to win in a landslide, and maybe one of his sycophants dug up some polling that indicated it was a possibility.

The problem is that Trump will still be president for two more months if Biden wins. And he is already doing everything he can to discredit a Biden win.

This will not be a peaceful transition.

Biden snags 'Keep America Great' domain in latest act of Trump trolling – The Democrat's campaign recently learned the web domain was available and snagged it.

[up]x2, [up]x4: Also because most mail-in ballots are likely to be for Biden and most in-person votes will likely be for Trump, leading to absurd hot-take situations like Trump winning Illinois and Massachusetts if mailed ballots are ignored entirely (which the alt-right would definitely do). And even if the mailed-in ballots aren't interfered with at all, it'll still take a couple of weeks to count everything properly.

Side note: I think today is the first day I actually saw a Biden ad on YouTube.

Trump denounced so-called cancel culture as, like, an insidious left-wing thing. He, Donald J. Trump, has tried to get dozens of people and entities canceled, fired, boycotted, including literally last week. Goodyear.
Ha!

The looting/riots. It's literally all I see when scrolling through Twitter feeds about Minneapolis or Kenosha: "Trump just won re-election", "Leftist leadership has failed big cities", etc.

However, Twitter can direct you to valid sources. Twitter can be a primary source for "what person A or company X said on Twitter". It can also provide links to primary or secondary sources (a company's blog post, a news article). However, it should not be relied upon for direct factual information any more than any other social media space.

Perform due diligence. Check sources. Establish independent corroboration.

[up] Yes, but from my understanding of speedyboris' post, the "source" so far are just random opinionated twits.

Oh. Well, that would fall under Twitter as a primary source... for the opinions of random opinionated twits. It's not evidence of anything other than that those people claim to hold those beliefs... if they are not Russian bots.

I am pretty sure we've yet to see any substantial polling after the Kenosha debacle. And let us not forget that polling this year round has been amazingly stable, with Biden usually leading by I believe 6%?

I've never followed Jim Gaffigan to any degree but I find that pleasantly surprised because based on my limited knowledge of his material/persona, he's a comedian (along with Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy) that I would have assumed (maybe unfairly) was a Trump supporter.

It really must've been quite a shock because it blew up tremendously.

Mind you, everyone who's a fan of his mentioned him being anti-Trump is not at all surprising, the fact that he snaped like that however was.

He actually had a bit about this in one of his specials, taped soon after the 2016 election:

Look, I didn't vote for Trump, but I walked around New York City, and everyone, the week after the election, looked at me like, "You did it. You did it!" And I was like, "I didn't do it!" But after a couple days, I was like, "Did I do it??"
