Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Silas: There’s also unconventional stuff like LRADs and laser dazzlers, very few police officers would have the type of protective gear necessary to be safe from those. I know there was also talk in certain states of having the guard position armored vehicles between the crowd and the police to keep the two groups apart.
And you are correct in pointing out that most governors would be pretty reluctant to order that kind of action.
Open conflict between the guard and police isn’t a super realistic thing to worry about. Lone wolf violence from the right and a renewed crackdown from the feds as the election draws closer are more concerning.

They should have sent a poet.As opposed to a huge outburst of right-wing violence if Trump wins?
Considering how hate crimes apparently spiked after Trump got elected, there'll likely be violence regardless of who wins the election - the difference is that if Biden wins, at least the perpetrators won't have White House support anymore.
We learn from history that we do not learn from historyWhite House says it is creating 'very large' dossier on Washington Post journalist and others
Well that's a giant red flag

x2,
x4: Also because most mail-in ballots are likely to be for Biden and most in-person votes will likely be for Trump
, leading to absurd hot-take situations like Trump winning Illinois and Massachusetts if mailed ballots are ignored entirely (which the alt-right would definitely do). And even if the mailed-in ballots aren't interfered with at all, it'll still take a couple of weeks to count everything properly.
Side note: I think today is the first day I actually saw a Biden ad on YouTube.

However, Twitter can direct you to valid sources. Twitter can be a primary source for "what person A or company X said on Twitter". It can also provide links to primary or secondary sources (a company's blog post, a news article). However, it should not be relied upon for direct factual information any more than any other social media space.
Perform due diligence. Check sources. Establish independent corroboration.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Oh. Well, that would fall under Twitter as a primary source... for the opinions of random opinionated twits. It's not evidence of anything other than that those people claim to hold those beliefs... if they are not Russian bots.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I am pretty sure we've yet to see any substantial polling after the Kenosha debacle. And let us not forget that polling this year round has been amazingly stable, with Biden usually leading by I believe 6%?
