Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes, but this openly? I haven't seen that before.
Also, Trevor Noah is right, these guys aren't militia, they are a gang. This shooter was a minor, and shouldn't be in any form of military in the first place.
I hope Biden is going to crack down hard on this.

Apparently Kyle Rittenhouse may have been part of a group that requested deputization
, which the Kenosha County Sheriff, David Beth, literally said "oh, hell no!" to, pointing out in the aftermath of Rittenhouse murdering two people that instead of an armed vigilante doing so, it would have been a deputized cop instead, and thus a liability to him personally, the County, and the State of Wisconsin.
And in infuriating news, Kenosha Police Chief Daniel Miskins engaged in Victim Blaming by saying that "I'm not gonna make a great deal of it but the point is -- the curfew's in place to protect. Had persons not been out involved in violation of that, perhaps the situation that unfolded would not have happened.
" Because that's the kind of rhetoric that the police should be espousing right now, right?
I did point out that the County Sheriff, at least, was very much antagonistic towards the Right-Wing Militia Fanatic subtype.
Also, they finally released the police report
, stating that a knife was on the driver's side floorboard of Blake's car - the problem is, I know a shitload of people that have knives on-hand for non-violent reasons, including my own brother. Possession of something =/= intent to use that something for aggressive purposes.
The newly released information described the moments before Blake was shot seven times in the back and named the Kenosha police officer who shot him.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, police were called to the 2800 block of 40th Street Sunday after a woman said her boyfriend "was present and was not supposed to be on the premises."
Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to arrest 29-year-old Blake, at one point using a Taser in an attempt to stop him, but that attempt was unsuccessful, the DOJ said.
"Mr. Blake walked around his vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and leaned forward," a press release from the department read. "While holding onto Mr. Blake’s shirt, Officer Rusten Sheskey fired his service weapon 7 times. Officer Sheskey fired the weapon into Mr. Blake’s back. No other officer fired their weapon."
Authorities noted that the Kenosha Police Department does not have body cameras, "therefore the officers were not wearing body cameras."
According to the release, Blake admitted to investigators that he did have a knife at the time and a knife was recovered from the driver's side floorboard of his vehicle. No other weapons were found, the report said.
The officers "immediately provided medical aid," the DOJ said, and Blake was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, where he remains.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
The article mentions that Blaek had mentioned the knife - which backfired in the same way that Philando Castile mentioning his CCW permit backfired.

There's also the possibility that neither tether hooks into the person, which tends to happen if they're wearing baggy clothing

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"That is not remotely within the realm of possibility.

Rasmussen's poll numbers consistently bias towards Republicans by about 2 or 3 points, yes.
EDIT: I was a bit too high on the lean — FiveThirtyEight found a 1.5-pt bias. They do only have them as a C+ pollster, though.

The damned queen and the relentless knight.Rasmussen is always noticeably biased towards Republicans in its polling isn't it? I remember that being a thing brought up basically ever election.
Correct, it has a well-established pattern of questionably generous polls.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangOne where a governor orders the guard to stop violence and explicitly tells them that if police are starting violence then the guard are to arrest the police.
Or where a police force goes completely rogue and attacks not only civilians but politicians who are important enough that they have armed protection in the force of national guardsmen.
I am not ruling out the possibility of a police force attempting to murder politicians pushing police reforms. We know that US forces are willing to send other police to die if said other police oppose police brutality, the NYPD Union may have already blackmailed the mayor, it’s not a big step.

The police were never on the side of democracy.
