Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x2 Here's my question when it comes to that: Who supports Donald J. Trump and isn't proud about that support? The Silent Majority may have existed with Reagan in the 80's (I can't say for certain it even existed then), but Republican Dogma, especially around Trump, is all about any high-up Republican being Jesus Christ 2.0: They can do no wrong, they can never be wrong, and if you even disagree with them once you either shut up or become a traitor to the USA.
I don't believe in this 'Silent Trumpeteer' theory. Maybe I'll be proven wrong (and that will be a terrible day), but from what I know about Republicans these days, is that they couldn't be more proud then to say, every chance they get, "I love Trump and will do anything to show that love".
Should we really expect the "shy Trump voter" effect to be as much of a thing in a world where Trump has already been elected once and his supporters are out and about?
The conditions that might promote that effect are just not their this election and I wonder why this Lincoln Project person would bring it forth.
I think there are many in the alt right cult who simply vote for Trump because that's who the cult has decided is its de facto leader for now. They are only loyal to Trump for as long as the cult is.
That would also explain why their loyalty seems to be so unwavering despite everything.
And then there's the people who think the Dems will somehow be worse than Trump.

2/ The White House pressured the CDC to change its guidance on testing asymptomatic people who have been exposed to the coronavirus. “It’s coming from the top down,” an official said. Another said the guidelines were not written by the CDC but were imposed. HHS Assistant Secretary Brett Giroir said the changes were “discussed at the last task force meeting and approved,” and that the idea had originated with himself and CDC Director Robert Redfield. However, Thursday was the same day Dr. Anthony Fauci was under general anesthesia for vocal cord surgery. Dr. Fauci confirmed
that he was not part of the discussion. Trump has repeatedly suggested that the U.S. should do less testing. (CNN / New York Times / Washington Post / Bloomberg)

3/ The Trump administration threatened to withhold Medicare and Medicaid funding from hospitals if they don’t report COVID-19 data to the Department of Health and Human Services. Until now, some hospitals were voluntarily reporting this information. The new rules, however, make reporting a requirement for participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. In July, the administration ordered hospitals to stop reporting coronavirus data to the CDC, but instead
send results to HHS by way of a private vendor. Weeks later, HHS reversed course
and returned the responsibility for data collection to the CDC. [Editor’s note: I’m admittedly confused here. Anyone able to clarify all of this for me?] (New York Times)

4/ The intelligence community said there is “no information or intelligence” that foreign countries, including Russia, are “engaged in any kind of activity to undermine any part of the mail-in vote.” The disclosure contradicts Trump and Attorney General William Barr, who have repeatedly falsely claimed that foreign adversaries are targeting mail ballots as part of a “rigged” presidential election. Senior officials, however, declined to discuss Russia’s efforts to amplify Trump’s attempts to sow mistrust and doubt about the legitimacy of the election. (NPR / Politico / CNN / Associated Press)
5/ Trump said he will send federal law enforcement and the National Guard to to Kenosha, Wisconsin to “restore law and order” amid protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, who was shot multiple times at close range and left paralyzed. Trump’s authority to send in federal resources, however, is limited without the direct invitation of the state government. Meanwhile, a white, 17-year-old police admirer was arrested and charged with homicide after two people were killed and another seriously wounded by gunfire. Kyle Rittenhouse traveled about 15 miles from Antioch, Illinois to Kenosha. He also appeared in the front row at a Trump rally in January. After three days following Blake’s shooting, Trump has not directly addressed it, but instead tweeted that he “will NOT stand for looting, arson, violence, and lawlessness on American streets.” (Politico / Bloomberg / ABC News / NBC News / Associated Press / Washington Post / BuzzFeed News)

6/ The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to reinstate restrictions on an abortion medication that were temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. In July, a federal judge blocked the FDA from enforcing its rule on mifepristone, saying the restrictions were an undue burden and “substantial obstacle” on women’s access to abortion services. The administration’s request, if granted, would again prevent women from getting the drug unless they visit a hospital, clinic, or medical office, and acknowledge in writing that they have been advised of the drug’s risks. (CNBC)
7/ In 2018, Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection officials suggested deploying a microwave weapon against immigrants at the border. The “heat ray” was designed by the military to make people’s skin feel like it is burning when they get within range of its invisible beams. Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, told an aide afterward that she would not authorize the use of the device. At a separate meeting earlier in the day – and 15 days before the 2018 midterms – Trump directed his Nielsen and White House staff that “extreme action” was needed to stop the migrants caravans heading to the U.S. border. poll/ 66% of likely voters in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin say they have serious concerns about COVID-19 – down from 69% two weeks ago. The share of respondents who said they have “very serious” concerns about the coronavirus dropped to 45% from 49%. (CNBC)
poll/ 49% of Black Americans say they are somewhat or very likely to get a flu shot this year, compared 65% of white Americans and 60% of Hispanics. 28% of Black Americans say they would be willing to take a first-generation COVID-19 vaccine, compared to 51% of white Americans and 56% of Hispanics. Overall, 62% of those surveyed say they are somewhat or very likely to get a flu shot, while 48% say they’ll take a first-generation COVID-19 vaccine. (Axios)

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo addressed the RNC from a rooftop in Jerusalem, where he was on a government-paid diplomatic mission, even though State Department employees were expressly told
to avoid political activity and not to attend political conventions. No sitting secretary of state had previously addressed a national political convention in at least 75 years. (New York Times / Politico)

Trump pardoned a man from the White House and hosted a naturalization ceremony for five others during the RNC. The full pardon for Jon Ponder, a man convicted of robbing a bank, aired during a segment in the first minutes of the RNC’s second night. Followed by Acting Homeland Security secretary Chad Wolf administering the Oath of Allegiance for five new citizens in a pre-taped ceremony. The Hatch Act prohibits federal employees from engaging in most political activity inside federal buildings or while on duty. A White House official, however, claimed that because the naturalization ceremony was part of Trump’s official schedule and publicized on a public website, “there was no violation of law.” (Washington Post / NPR / The Guardian / New York Times / Los Angeles Times / Axios)
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows dismissed accusations that Trump administration officials violated the Hatch Act by speaking at the Republican National Convention, saying “Nobody outside of the Beltway really cares.” Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Economic Director Larry Kudlow, and counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway, have all accepted speaking roles at the RNC. People who attended Melania Trump’s Rose Garden speech at the RNC were not required to get tested for COVID-19. A person who attended the speech said there were screening questions on the RSVP form, but no actual coronavirus tests or temperature checks were required or conducted at the White House. Most of the attendees also did not wear masks, and the chairs provided for attendees were not spaced six feet apart. (CNN)
The RNC canceled one of its scheduled speakers after she promoted an anti-Semitic and QAnon conspiracy theories on Twitter. Hours before Mary Ann Mendoza, a member of the Trump campaign’s advisory board, was set to appear in a video praising Trump’s efforts on immigration policy, she retweeted a threat containing nearly every anti-Semitic trope of the last century and claimed that Jewish forces in the banking industry were are out to enslave the world. Mendoza later deleted her tweet and posted an apology “for not paying attention.” (Daily Beast / CNN / CNBC / Washington Post / Politico / NBC News)

FWIW, the Lincoln Project are not operating in good faith. They only care that Trump makes all republicans unable to hide how evil they are and the Lincoln Project does not like that association.
Whether their statements against Trump are a net good, I do not know yet.

My musician pageThere is no evidence that the “shy X vote” is a real thing, if it were to exist we would likely notice a difference in results from robo-polling (where a machine asks the questions) and caller-polling (where a person asks the polling questions).
Polls may underestimate Trump’s vote if they’re snot weighting by education, while many are now I don’t believe they all are.
I know 538 went over the “shy Trump voter” idea at one point, if people want further reading.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe Lincoln Project is not the only group of Republicans out to help defeat Trump.
There is a group of his own former staff who have decided to campaign against him. Including a snappy twitter thing where Trump of course denied knowing their leader, who responded with a picture where he and Trump were giving the camera the thumbs up.
I think its telling that if you're such a miserable son of a bitch that people who formerly worked for you want you out and say you're hideously unqualified, then that says something.
I do kind of wonder how many more screeching performances Guilfoyle will put in before Trump Jr. switches her over to decaf in secret...
At least some members of The Lincoln Project are out to torch the entire Party at this point. At least in DC, they have branded every Republican sans Romney as Trumpist who needs to be defeated.
Now, this might change if Trump loses. But I think they have seriously burned a lot of their bridges. I doubt they'll be welcomed back, barring a Establishment purge of Trumpism.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Maybe it will be someone (in all likelihood, a man) who will try to return to keeping the Unfortunate Implications implications.
Do not obey in advance."Yeesss my master," Milo Yiannopolous intoned as he babbled words that should never be spoken by mortal lips.
"Tonight, we raise Adolf Hitler from the dead to lead the Republican Party!"
"My master...I have to use the potty." Milo broke character and whined.
"GOTT DAMMIT YOU BUFFOON!" A giant puff of smoke indicated the end of the necromantic ritual - no success.
Maybe outside of more Ahnenerbe-ish pursuits, they'll try and turn Tucker Carlson into a Presidential Candidate. He seems to be a favorite of the alt right.
With The Lincoln Project, the impression I get is that they're "actual" Conservatives in contrast to the far-right reactionaries running the GOP. They're the guys who haven't actually forgotten their aim if you will, IE the kind of American nationalist/patriot that sees the Confederates as a bunch of traitors and sees its defeat as a Crowning Moment Of Awesome and hasn't forgotten that America was important in stopping Nazis.
Whether or not this makes them benevolent is subjective and depends on how sympathetic you are to conservatism as an ideology, though I'd say at the very least they're not Trumpists.
Admittedly, this is coming from a guy who is Conservative himself but who hasn't seen much of their content. I probably should though, I've jumped out of political youtube channels because they tend to either be Pseudo-Marxists or Alt Lite-guys.
Leviticus 19:34Note that his weak reasoning is, "It is historically difficult to defeat an incumbent president, No. 1." And he thinks the difference is only a couple of points, which still puts Biden in the lead.
That said, I don't discount the idea that there are more Trump voters out there than I'd like to believe. Undoubtedly Trump's culture war campaign to turn out even more non-college educated whites is going to have some success. But that's why we have to work just as hard to turn out our base/swing voters.
Make phone calls, send texts, post convention speeches on your social media feed, wear Biden swag. I know it sounds weird to us political junkies, but there are still people out there not sure who to cast their ballot for, if they're going to vote at all. Don't leave them in the wilderness. Give them a place to call home.
Yeah, Il Duce's campaign to stoke fear and resentment I think might have less of an effect than he's hoping.
I mean, it might turn out the slashers from Wrong Turn to vote for him, but everyone else is already submerged in negativity he's unleashed. They've seen what fear and hate stoked by the President results in.
COVID-19 running amok, 177,000 deaths and widespread corruption.

I think to some extent that might be true but to what extent and how much it will affect the final result I don't think we can say. The problem with the "shy trump voter" thing is that while it may be true, because the people do not want to admit it you can't really make too great an estimate of how many there are, or so I would assume anyway.
