Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In other news:
Well, that's certainly a sneaky way to spy on your citizens. Can't get a warrant? No problem, just buy the information from third parties. Don't ask where that info came from, either.
Speaking of spying:
Basically, Trump is demanding that coronavirus researches spy on Wuhan labs in exchange for funding, all in pursuit of blaming China for the virus of course.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesSo a few things.
1) Apparently (according to Claudia Conway), she found out about her mother's resignation through a tweet
- "They didn’t even talk about it with any of us …just tweeted about it as if this is going to change anything and make me not emancipate myself." She's also none-too-thrilled with her father, as the only thing they agree on is how awful Trump is - beyond that, no commonalities to be had politically.
2) The RNC platform being just "Trump" - yes, that's actually the case
, though the rationale offered up is hilariously contradictory. Though something to note is that they're adopting the 2016 platform again instead of writing a new one.
The announcement followed a vote in June, where the executive committee decided to adopt the 2016 platform for November’s presidential election.
They voted to repeat the platform, because the coronavirus pandemic made it impossible for the thousands of national delegates to meet up and vote on changes, according to LGBTQ Nation.
In the statement on Sunday, the RNC claimed that if the committee had being able to meet, that it “would have undoubtedly unanimously agreed to reassert the party’s strong support for president Donald Trump and his administration.”
The statement added: “The Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the president’s America-first agenda.”
3) And unrelated to what's been discussed, but a Konesha, Wisconsin police officer shot a black man 7 times in the back
while responding to a domestic disturbance call. While the black man, Jacob Blake, was getting into his car... while the officer was holding onto the guy's shirt, so he was literally in arm's reach when he opened fire. And according to the family's attorney, Blake's kids were in the car when their father was shot. It's like a horrifying version of an Escalating Punchline.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
So far, anyway. He's apparently in stable condition
after surgery. And according to that article...
The video shows Blake walking toward his vehicle as two officers follow him with their guns drawn. They did not appear to use any other force on Blake before one of them shot him and he slumped onto the steering wheel.
So he did literally nothing to warrant that level of response, even if they were suspicious - nowhere in the US, so far as I'm aware, is a person compelled to give a witness statement to the police if they don't want to.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"He survived getting shot seven times at point blank range? That's kind of amazing.
Of course it is unwarranted, it just goes to show just how far out of line the US police is these days. This is what you get when you give civilian police military training.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesThey were responding to a domestic disturbance and he was trying to break up the fight.
Of course they shot him. He's a black man. They automatically assumed that the disturbance in question was him assaulting these two women.
They weren't following him to compel witness testimony. They wanted to plant drugs on him and send him to prison for forty years. As is always the case in these situations, the police decided they were going to destroy his life and there is literally nothing he could have done to prevent something terrible from happening to him.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's Not Hyperbole in this case. The cops were operating on a simple program of "if person=black TRUE, then SHOOT". So kindly store the tone policing somewhere cool and dry.
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.The presence of a black person adjacent to a crime, or even a potential crime, turns some cops into psychopathic murderers. This is simple fact.
By the way, if they would have shot a white person under similar circumstances, that doesn't help much. It merely downgrades them from racist psychopaths to just plain psychopaths.

I wonder if the Republicans will ever have a realization about how childish they are, or if they're happy to make politics like that forever.
I'm also extremely depressed at the thought that acting childish will become seen as a position of strength by Republican voters and that politics are forever tainted.
