The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even the 'American' Know-Nothings of the 1850's had 1 Platform Policy to stand on, and it wasn't "Whatever Millard Fillmore wants". Hell, Trump doesn't even know what his Platform for 2020 is!

This sounds to me that the Party knows well (or hoping well that) they're screwed this year and are just gonna wait in 2024 to create a platform of "Whatever Biden did, we're against"... But then again its weird they aren't doing that this year.

They basically are. There's a line in there specifically about opposing the Obama-Biden presidency's stances and whatever the DNC announces.

So yeah, their official platform boils down almost word-for-word to "whatever Trump wants" and "NOT whatever Biden says".

It's been fun.

In the latest version of "rats leaving a sinking ship", Kellyanne Conway announced on Twitter that she's leaving the White House at the end of the month. Here's a follow up article from the Washington Post, which claims she's leaving because it's best for her children.

Re: GOP literally not having a platform: So this reads to me as them finding a way to say 'we've accepted that Trump's gonna lose, and are no focusing on efforts on wasting as little time and resources on him as possible' in a way that Trump will interpret as them stroking his ego.

Technically, the No Nothings had a policy of anti-Catholicism and anti-Irish as its platform but the majority of them switched to being Republicans because it turned out they were also disgusted by slavery.

History is odd.

Yes, but you should have a party platform for OTHER candidates.

I just... but if Trump loses, then that means they just have nothing. I know they refuse to believe that he could lose, but that’s just so baffling.

Kellyanne Conway is leaving the Trump Administration. At the same time, her husband, George Conway, is leaving the Lincoln Project. Both parties are framing it as a need to look after their kids in the coming school year.

It's so scary how true that is. They're using their 2010 playbook to obstruct the party in power when they're the ones in power.

I'm not sure what makes me want to laugh more, the idea that the Republicans will sign on to a platform with term limits†, the plan to establish a fucking moon base, or the inherently contradictory foreign policy section.

Also of course there is an entire section of "make the police even worse".

† Not that anyone should actually agree with this. Did they just hijack the Libertarian platform or something?

I'm confused by contradiction of "Bully the other countries, America da best" and "partner up with other countries for enviromentalism stuff" but I guess idea is "Make other nations have America's water be da cleanest" tongue

(but yeah, the part of ending wars and expanding military influence and terrorism is really brain dead)
