Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The law does seem rather clear on this, unless they get "Antifa is gonna attack the polling stations, we promise!" past the courts.
In more awful news, a CBS poll found that 57% of Republicans believe that the current COVID death toll is acceptable.

...Would it be illegal to have a political test for border crossers? Only mostly joking.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerHis convention speech has made me more and more convinced that Biden is actually one of the Blue Wizards who wandered off from Middle Earth.
Which really puts those Onion articles in a new light.
According to the WSJ, Trump does have several strengths that he can use to tighten the race, such as white support, economics and increased interest among Republicans.
Thoughts on this?
He's been losing white support due to his actions effecting whites in large numbers, the economy doesn't mean anything to a lot of people who are suffering and jobless because of the pandemic, and how many Republicans are actually left who aren't Trumpeteers?
So the economy has been something that's been working to improve Trump's numbers for most of his term. Because people tend to vote like they think the President is 100% in control of what the economies' doing.
But now, thanks to COVID, the economy isn't doing so well anymore, and thanks to that same principle, it's now become a factor working against him. Which is why Biden is so much further ahead of him now than he was in March.
Theoretically, if the economy recovered before the election, it would narrow the polls. Which is so he's been so desperate to re-open and doing his best to ignore COVID. But that has totally backfired, because a virus doesn't care about propaganda or intimidation tactics, so trying to re-open early has just ensured that COVID stays around for longer, and therefore ensured that the economy will not recover in time.

It's a real world case of Stupid Evil. Self-preservation by any villain who has any common sense would have resulted in doing everything possible to halt the virus to begin with, which would have resulted in a possible easy victory in the election due to having stopped a deadly virus from spreading. However, by the Republicans doing everything they can to ignore the virus, they've made things worse and have put an easy victory into an easy defeat. There's a chance almost every Senate Republican up for election this year, except Mitt Romney, could lose because of their own idiocy.

"In a move surprising absolutely no one"Eh, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Democrats do have a good chance of retaking the Senate due to Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina, possibly Iowa, Georgia, and maybe even Montana, but unless the situation drastically worsens and the Republicans are blamed as much as Trump is, red states still look like they'll stay red.
Basing all this mainly on 538's aggregate polls.
Mitt Romney isn't up for election this year; the Senate Seats are divided where 1/3rd of them are elected every 6 years, and Romney was elected into the Senate last year.
However, because of how Republicans are handling this, a grand majority of them are most likely going to be voted out, especially in Colorado, Arizona, and Maine. While I don't see McConnell losing his Election this year, I can see Lindsey Graham losing to Jaime Harrison as polls put them really close and even flip flop between them winning.
The RNC has announced that there is no Republican platform for 2020
, just whatever Trump has in mind.

The acting Secretary of Homeland Security appears to be shutting down Trump's efforts to put federal agents at polling locations, claiming the Department lacks the authority to do so.
