Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

House passes bill to block postal service changes until after the election
Too bad it won’t pass the senate...
My musician pageThe Delivering for America Act aims to halt recent operational changes to the United States Postal Service and provide the agency with an additional $25 billion in funding. More than two dozen House Republications voted in favor of the bill, which passed 257-150.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell released a statement shortly after, saying: “The Senate will absolutely not pass stand-alone legislation for the Postal Service while American families continue to go without more relief.”
I hate the Senate so much now.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Just hate Republicans. This is rank cynicism by McConnell, who is also holding up relief legislation.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There is a hypothesis that these old Republicans hate the world and can't stand the thought of people doing better after they are gone from it. I can't say how true that is.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@Fighteer I think a more likely explanation is simply that these people are old and therefore not very mobile, and therefore, watch TV quite a bit...such as the news. Especially Fox News.
But as a broader trend of older people leaning increasingly right, I'd say the big one is simply that they've "mastered" "the system" as it currently is. The person most familiar with 'the game' is likely going to be the person who isn't fond of changing the rules, especially not a game they consider themselves good at.
Though where that hypothesis is probably true is that they've probably placed a big value on the hard work that they've had to put into getting where they were, which makes the idea of people getting it for free seem incredibly unfair to them.
Leviticus 19:34And yet they dramatically overestimate the value of the "hard work" that they put in. "Fuck you, got mine" and all that.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"“All he wants to do is appeal to his base,” Barry said in a conversation secretly recorded by her niece, Mary L. Trump. “He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this.”
Barry, 83, was aghast at how her 74-year-old brother operated as president. “His goddamned tweet and lying, oh my God,” she said. “I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories. The lack of preparation. The lying. Holy shit.”
Probably not much of actual consequence but hey, every gram of pressure on Donald is a good thing right now.

My grandmother has COVID I just found out. We're in Florida. There is a very real chance Ron DeSantis's policies may kill a member of my family.
The notion of an in-person RNC spreading this disease more is terrifying, karma or no
