There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah that’s a really bad look, trying to oust an incumbent democrat senator, and one of the most progressive senators around.
That’s incredibly destructive to party unity, I wouldn't blame the progressive wing if they refused to back her to remain speaker come 2021, she’s completely destroying the idea of the speaker as an impartial figure who keeps the caucus together.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranExcept as speaker Pelosi is meant to promote unity, not further division.
Also it really bad form to mess with someone else’s caucus, I’d be surprised if Schumer was happy about this, it’s a direct attempt by Pelosi to replace one of his colleagues with someone she favours.

Exactly, not to mention that one Democrat trying to beat another in an election is the entire point of a primary. It doesn't particularly harm party unity because everyone knows that it's ultimately up to the voters.
But this? It's Pelosi putting her thumb on the scale and trying to oust a long-time left-wing Senator. It's a declaration of war on the progressive wing of the party.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangParable, your live posting of the DNC has been really helpful. Thanks.
Are you going to put yourself through the RNC as well?
The MC is making jokes and puns.
A historian is explaining the dangers of nativism, nationalism, and isolationism, and how this is a fight for democracy.
The Republican conventions is apparently Trump, online right wing trolls, and random examples of white nationalists. Screw that.
Though I think Bannon won't be showing up anymore.

Yeah: Be a Congressman
. Markey actually has the backing of many House Members; Kennedy is mostly being backed by fellow Senators
.
Talk of kicking Pelosi from Speakership over 'division' is utterly ridiculous to me. Should everyone who didn't back Biden lose their jobs in Congress or State Governments? Of course not, especially because most of them now fullheartedly support Biden. Regardless of whether Markey or Kennedy win the Democrats are gonna support them.
That sounds incredibly ridiculous; are you also saying anyone who supported a 'Centrist' Candidate for President (which I'm almost certain Pelosi did) was declaring war on the Progressives? I know Pelosi has power as Speaker, but do you think anything Pelosi says will actually influence any Democrat that's going to vote in Massachusetts one way or the other?
Besides, Markey isn't even a Centrist; he's just as Liberal as Kennedy.
Deb Haaland, Native American congresswoman, is talking about the importance of voting.
Clips of senior citizens stressing the importance of Mail-in voting.
That chick who does impressions of Trump on Tik Tok or Instagram is getting a bit.
Oh, now she's talking in her own voice, telling everyone Trump doesn't want any of us to vote and we have to defy him no matter what
The Sec. of State from California and Michigan are up, explaining how mail-in vote is safe and they're doing everything they can to protect the votes from Trump.
You really don’t see a difference between a party leader, who is meant to speak for everyone in the party, attempting to oust an incumbent senator and a random official backing a non-winning candidate in an open primary?
Like those are two very different things, I really don’t understand how you can conflate the two.
You’re right that Kennedy isn’t particularly centrist, who actually paints this as worse, as it then looks like Pelosi is endorsing him not because of his politics but because she wants to have someone she has influence over go into other chamber and replace someone who is influenced by the senate leader.
That’s personal power building at the expense of the party. The senate leader and house leader really shouldn’t be endorsing opposing candidates in a primary, that’s a big show of disunity.
The good senate news is that Biden is now openly saying that the filibuster will go if he wins and gets the same obstruction that Obama did, while Schumer wasn’t as explicit he’s sending the same message. [1]

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnd he's talking about is family history and the dignity of working people. How the wealth gap and poverty is drilling ordinary people while Trump brags about the stock market. How Joe will fight for workers rights and better wages.
Biden is doing a round table with workers.

What? I never said he was, my point is that she's trying to get a long-term left-wing Senator out of power. I.e the exact opposite of the so-called party unity that centrists have insisted that leftists show.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangShe’s literally endorsing a candidate opposed by the senate leader.
We should not have the house speaker and the senate leader on opposite sides of a primary, especially not a Congressional one.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI love this night's host.
A WWII veteran and Trump voter is explaining why he's supporting Joe Biden now.
Military family and Jill explaining how Joe looks out for military families. How the families Joe has been involved with know how much he cares.
Tammy Duckworth is speaking now, praising Biden for looking out for the military, and lambasting Trump for not caring about the same despite what he says.

As a MA resident that wasn't going to bother mailing in my primary ballot once I saw the only contested race was Markey/Kennedy and now has a vote for Markey sealed and ready to drop in a mailbox tomorrow; I can state with a fair degree of certainty that a big name centrist trying to thumb the scale against one of the more progressive senators will motivate some votes.

"This is a quiet callback to the 2008 DNC, when Duckworth introduced Beau Biden. Now, tragically, her speech is coming before his memorial video."
Mayor Pete is up now. He's standing where he got married. Talking about how Joe was supporting gay marriage before the party mainstream did. How he's living proof as a gay man who ran for president that the country can change for the better.

This is cute; a bunch of the other last primary challengers are Zooming together talking about their experiences with Joe Biden. Booker is hosting. He called it a Survivors reunion of people who got voted off the island.
It's scary how much they sound like us.
Bloomberg is making the case against Trump from a business and economic perspective.

Give it a few years and some people here might work with some of their successors.
I’m still not convinced that AO Cs staff aren’t secretly lurkers in this thread.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranNever thought I'd see a Johnny Tremain reference in the DNC.
A kid with a stutter is talking about how Joe helped him with practicing to speak more normally.
"Kids like me are depending on you to elect a president we can look up to."
A rabbi is talking about the day Joe showed up out of the blue to his synagogue to find the lady who had been donating $18 to his campaign every year and pay his respects.
Joe's granddaughters are on, talking about how wonderful he is. That they urged him to run for president.
This goofball family is talking about what the president means to young children.
We're getting a biography of Biden now. The struggles his family went through. His stutter. His mom taking no crap.
"In 1972, a 29-year-old Joe Biden defeated a 62-year-old incumbent U.S. senator. He was the original generational change!"

That's puzzling and maybe a bit worrisome. Did Markey do something to fall out of favor with Pelosi or something?
