The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Parable, I haven't heard Obama's entire speech, but your excerpts alone make me wanna pump my fist in the air.

I see that the bromance between him and Biden is still there. I never got that sense from Trump and Pence. Pence is just Trump's evangelical beard...

I didn't even summarize half of it. Man, we so all need to watch this as soon as possible.

Goddamn I missed hearing Obama speak.

(edit for clarity: in the sense of "I miss the time when he made public appearances regularly" not "he just spoke but I was unable to see it".)

[nja]And for the very first post after 12 hours because of maintenance: the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York is charging the leaders of "We Build The Wall" online fundraising campaign (including Steve Bannon) for defrauding hundreds of thousands of donors.

And absolutely nobody is surprised that "Trump's Wall" turned out to be just another scam, designed to make morons and their money part ways, straight into someone else's pockets...

Wonder how the cult that no doubt donated to this is going to feel now...

Not sure if I'm more glad that Bannon is getting in trouble or that those people gave money to a fraud that could have gone to Trump's campaign.

52% of voters who sat out 2016 will vote for Biden. 32% will vote for Trump.

41% of third party voters in 2016 will vote for Biden. 30% for Trump.

9% of Trump voters will vote for Biden. 4% of Clinton supporters will vote for Trump.

Considering how narrow Trump's win was four years ago, those are all excellent numbers for Biden.

[up] I'm betting they're people who think the Democrats have gone too far left, or would profit more under Trump (how anybody thinks that is beyond me).

Perhaps they’re people who believed Hilary was as evil as the republicans claimed, but actually wanted evil in charge? Makes about as much sense as anything a Trump voter would do.

There’s going to be a level of statistical noise in anything, that’s liable to be part of it, that and Republicans who switched to Hillary because they thought Trump might follow up on some of his less-Republican ideas (big infrastructure spending, real change to foreign policy), they’ve now learnt that Trump will follow the Republican line on such things.

To add to the strangeness:

Bannon was arrested Thursday morning by postal inspectors, with Coast Guard assistance, aboard the 152-foot yacht "Lady May" off the coast of Westbrook, Connecticut. That yacht has been owned by the Chinese real estate billionaire Guo Wengui, a business partner of Bannon's. (The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that federal and state authorities are investigating fundraising by a media company the two founded.)

Bannon was arrested by USPS.

Let's not go the "Sanders voters cost Hillary the victory" nonsense road again please.

But no one was doing that? It's one thing to speak out about claims that Sanders was solely or primarily responsible for her lose, but you seem to step in anytime anyone mentions that he or voters who favored him could even be a factor, and I don't understand why.
