Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It’s really hard not to sound “patronizing” at this point.
There are literally no good reasons to support Trump, and hundreds of reasons not to. It’s not even about political positions any more (though it certainly IS about that). Even on a level of “do you want a president who is capable of thinking about a national crisis in terms other than his own ego?”, supporting Trump is unjustifiable, stupid, and immoral.

First priority of tonight is gun violence. Video of people who have lost loved ones to guns, who have faith that Biden will take up the issue that Trump does not care about.
Gabby Gifford, who was shot in the head, is giving a speech on gun control.
"We can fight. We can vote. We can be on the right side of history. Joe Biden was there for me, he'll be there for you too. Vote vote vote!"

Next up is climate change. The governor of New Nuevo Mexico is talking about the success her state has had in containing Covid and addressing climate change. Promising that Joe will rejoin Paris, invest in green jobs, divest from fossil fuels, etc. Warning that we'll lose to this crisis if Trump is elected.
Video of climate disasters devastating communities, and how low income, minority communities are bearing the brunt of everyday pollution. How Trump dismisses it as a hoax, comparing it to Biden's Senate record on climate and plan to to use clean energy to Build Back Better.
Now we're going to young people who have been directly affected by the climate crises. A girl who lost her home in the Camp Fire, a boy whose family farm is going broke because of unpredictable weather. A girl whose low income neighborhood is wrecked with asthma.
Billie Eilish is up.

Immigration. A little girl is reading a letter to Trump, explaining her family's history. How her mother was undocumented. That she obeyed the law, paid taxes, and married a Marine. That her Marine dad thought Trump would look out for military families so he voted for him. Then Trump deported his wife.
Obama's immigration speech is making me cry.

Hillary Clinton is up. Pointing out that she told everyone to give Trump an open mind the night he won the election, and that Obama handed him a prosperous and prepared country and that if Trump has shown even one iota of empathy things might have been better.
That Joe has empathy that she has experienced firsthand. And he and Kamala aren't just the "Not Trump" vote. That they have progressive ideas. People can vote for Biden because a vote for Biden is a vote for Dreamers, Police reform, Honest elections, Green energy, economic reform.
Clinton is wearing Suffragist white.
"If we're strong together, we'll heal together. We can redeem the soul of this nation by voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris."
Pelosi coming in like a boss.
Edited by Parable on Aug 19th 2020 at 6:56:39 AM
Pelosi reminding everyone that the House has sent countless bills to help the country to the Senate but Mc Connell and Trump have blocked everything. That she has a pandemic relief bill ready for months that they're ignoring. That they're still trying to take away healthcare.
"But we know something [Trump] does not. That when women succeed, America succeeds."
Survivors/Advocates of sexual assault talk about what happened to them, how they found a way to become strong. That Biden listened to them and took up the Violence Against Women's Act. That he went around everywhere to build up support for the bill and fought against people whose mentality was, "What happens in the home stays in the home."
Now on to the economy. The former Secretary of Labor under Obama championing Biden's ability to get the economy back on track, since he's done it before with the Recovery Act. That so many business are struggling or have failed, including farmers, and Trump hasn't done enough to help them. That the big business are still fine with Trump's help.
Warren is up! Talking about childcare.
"I love a good plan, and Joe Biden has some really good plans."
She's talking about how childcare, or the lackthereof, made holding a job impossible and she nearly broke down until her aunt came to live with her and take care of the kids so Warren could have a career. That Biden's childcare plan will enable countless struggling parents to safely enter the workforce and leave poverty.
"We stay in this fight because when our children, and our children's children ask us what we did during this dark chapter is this nation's history we can look them straight in the eye and say we organized, we persisted and we changed America."

Obama is up. Talking about the start of the nation, that the Constitution was imperfect, but within it was the blueprint, representative democracy, to make it better, freer, more just.
That he didn't expect Trump would follow his lead, but he did hope Trump would sober up to the gravity of the office. But Trump has shown no interest in doing the work, or finding common ground. Just enriching himself and using the White House as another reality TV show.
"Donald Trump hasn't grown into the office because he can't."
That our democratic institutions are being destroyed, and our reputation is in shambles. That 170,000+ Americans are dead.
That there are still people who haven't made up their minds yet, because they just don't know Joe Biden yet. So Obama will tell you about his brother, Joe Biden right now.
That Joe always made the long journey home to see his kids.
That Joe is a kindred spirit for military families, because he's been in their shoes.
That Joe was always the last one staying in the room with him whenever Obama had to make a difficult decision.
That Joe managed the Recovery Act and oversaw the longest growth rate in US history.
Joe knows the world and we know him.
Joe knows that the world wants an America that will stand for democracy and stand up to dictators.
That Joe believes the right to vote is sacred and should be made easier.
"I'm asking you to believe in Joe to lead us out of this darkness and build us back better."
Telling people that democracy isn't done when you vote, that you have to keep participating or you'll lose it.

Kamala is on early. Telling everyone to have a voting plan. Explaining why the Republicans are trying to stop us from voting, from getting things done, from making things better.
