Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I agree, I think the stakes are too high for him to just abandon ship. He is going to double down and do everything he can to stay in power.
And yet I'm crazy for saying he will try to pull off a coup. See what I mean about Trump trying to pull off a Cassandra Gambit?

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesWe'll cross that bridge if we get to it. The main thing for now is just winning the elections in November. Not just the WH, but Senate and House seats too. And local elections for that matter.
And all this coup talk really isn't helping.

Disgusted, but not surprisedA What the Fuck Just Happened Today preview:
The Trump campaign started selling face masks. The campaign is also telling Trump’s supporters that he “urges all patriotic Americans to wear a face cover when they are unable to socially distance.” Trump initially refused to wear a face mask and called them a “double-edged sword.” He also mocked Biden for wearing one in public in May. Mask use among Trump’s base increased after Trump started wearing one. (Axios)

Stopped clock strikes twice moment: Trump is going to pardon Susan B. Anthony for her attempt at voting in 1872.
If Trump loses the election and refuses to leave office, the Secret Service will drag him out on his ass on January 20. If they don't, the military will.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"![]()
Oh the Secret Service will definitely drag him out. He made them pay for overly expensive things, the Republicans lowered their pay, AND he treats them like crap. Considering Obama and Biden treated them like family for 8 years, they'll drag him out kicking and screaming.
Trump tweeted "save the Post Office."
(It's a quote retweet by someone else if you feel bad about looking at his Twitter page.)

And here we have more of the famous “prescribing cyanide under the claim it’s medicine.”
I’m gonna start calling all the GOP’s claims to their base that voting for them will have the exact opposite effect as what it will really have as cyanide prescriptions for short.

My musician pageI wasn't saying it'll actually work. I just think it's very likely that he tries to entice his supporters to rise up and cause as much trouble as they can. He'll definitely try to flee the country afterwards, and he'll definitely leave all his cronies behind to face the music instead of him.
Not sure where he'd end up though. Would he go to Russia? I feel like Putin is likely to laugh him out of the country now that he's outlived his usefulness. Brazil or Indonesia, maybe? I seem to recall that Duterte and Bolsonaro are pretty chummy with him because they're the same mold of popularists.

As when this last came up I’d urge people who want to think about how possible a coup is to go and look up who the relevant figures are in such a scenario, and what beliefs they hold.
As for Trump fleeing somewhere, Florida could work if he got Pence to take over and pardon all federal crimes, while having the governor of Florida pardon him for all state-level crimes in Florida.
He could still be charged in other states for crimes committed there, but I don’t know how easy it is for a state to extradite someone from another state.
Also Pence pardoning him might itself be a crime, so Pence might refuse to do it.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

He has already made it crystal clear to his cult that "the only way he can lose, is if the election is RIGGED!"
That and demanding to serve eight more years in office for insane reasons.
He is openly telling everybody that he wants to be a dictator at this point and expects everyone to be "fine" with it.
So expect the cult to throw a ruckus when he loses in November and he refuses to leave the white house by having Barr or some other sycophant find a loophole for him to stay in office and "undo" the election results in the months between November and January...
