The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One of the GameXplain crew took a picture of a locked USPS mailbox in Seattle.

They may not be taking mailboxes, but they'll find other ways to keep the mail slow.

Source for the Pelosi thing.

Can't c/p all the important bits atm but it's an emergency hearing set for August 24 and the USPS leadership have been requested to show up and testify.

I can't imagine what such a hearing would actually accomplish with half of Congress dead set of killing the USPS.

This is insane. It is so insane I cant even think of the correct term, legally for what is happening. Control Fraud is when your executive officer is looting the operation, but that is not what the post master general is doing, he is just.. sabotaging it. Worse, since fucking with the post is a federal crime, if he does get arrested, Trump will just pardon him.

Honestly, at this point, I am just waiting for the announcement that Trump has ordered the statue of liberty to be dismantled for scrap.

well a CNN poll has Biden’s lead shrunk massively in the past month and now just a 4% lead with a 4% margin of error.

This plus election trampering I think the dems are in huge trouble.

It's one poll. And besides, this kind of shrinkage is to be expected as the election draws closer.

I don't ignore polls, but I also don't like putting too much significance on any one poll.

As for the attempted election tampering via gutting the USPS...I've already pointed out multiple times that mail voting doesn't actually favor either party in a significant way. It's bad no doubt about it, but it's not bad because it'll give the GOP an insurmountable advantage. It's bad because placing obstacles for voting is bad in principle.

To say nothing of the fact that the USPS does tons of other things besides mail voting. So gutting it would fuck over so many people over so many things.

Based on Nate Silver's poll tracker, it looks like that one is an outlier poll, anyway.

I've already pointed out multiple times that mail voting doesn't actually favor either party in a significant way.

Normally it doesn’t, but we have no idea what the vote-by-Mail demographics will be this election. If it has moved from enfranchisement for a specific group (normally older people thus slightly favouring republicans) to general enfranchisement (which we know favours democrats) than it very much could have an impact on democrats.

Your point about a single poll however is spot on, look at the polling averages people, which yes have been narrowing slightly recently.

The asylums was closed down years ago due to most being considered inhumane,in any case your comment is a little tasteless

Anyway, when I see polls predicting a massive Trump win I have to wonder if the person making the poll badly wants Trump to win for whatever reason
