Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Unless they're deliberately misquoting and keeping the same rambling style:
“I will bring down taxes and I’ll make sure that New York City is a safe place. I mean, this is one of our cherished — this is a cherished diamond of this country. And we can’t let this happen to New York.”
The president said his campaign would spend money on efforts to win New York and that he plans to make campaign stops. He bashed New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s performance.
“We’re going to invest in there, we’ll visit. I’m going to put it down as you know on the list,” Trump said. “For instance, we think we’re going to win New Mexico, we think we’re going to win Minnesota. We think we’re, we have a shot perhaps at Virginia because they have a very, very strange governor.”
Not so much if it turns out that the resources he wastes aren't actually his to begin with.
(Remember, this is a man that has not paid a single one of the tabs for his campaign rallies, none, and is trying to force the states he appears in to pay for them instead.)
He will most likely just dine-and-dash again wherever he goes on his cult-rallies...

It probably isn't, but who's going to stop them? The incredibly corrupt Republican president and his administration? The Justice Department that's acting as Trump's personal legal firm? The Congress that is half controlled by Republicans who fall into lockstep behind Trump? The conservative-leaning Supreme Court?
Hypothetically could a democrat governor declare a state of emergency and send the national guard to help with the postal sorting and delivery for the week before Election Day?
Since apparently we’re in exactly that crazy a world.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnd in some good election news: the Supreme Court rejected a request by the Republicans to force Rhode Island to reinstate a rule requiring mail-in ballots be signed by two witnesses or a public notary which was culled because of COVID-19; Thomas, Alito, and Gorush dissented.
It looks like the case wasn’t actually ruled on, they refused to hear the case because the Republican National Committee don’t have grounds to challenge the suspension of a rule that hadn’t come into effect yet. It seems to say that if any state officials had objected to what RI is doing things would be different.

Except for when they gutted the Voting Rights Act, I think the Roberts court's attitude towards voting rights, gerrymandering, etc., has been that they don't care.
They won't stop Republicans for voter suppression or gerrymandering, they won't do anything to make voting easier, even during the pandemic, but they won't invalidate the laws Democrats pass. It's basically a "not my problem" attitude.

He thinks he can win over the state he already rejected by changing his state of residence to Florida?
Disgusted, but not surprised
