The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As someone who live in a dictatorship can tell you, is not surprising, trump is mantaing a constant engage with their follower to kept them in edge, it would take a lot to drop it into really bad numbers.

So, Biden won Connecticut. Does that mean Tulsi Gabbard will finally concede the nomination?

Meanwhile, the armchair bothsiders are coming out of the woodwork with the announcement of Kamala Harris as Biden's running mate. Some of them say that Harris is probably the worst pick as VP. Are they right, or at least have a point?

It looks like Marjorie Taylor Greene won her runoff - the GOP's worst member has gone from Steve King —> Marjorie Taylor Greene. I don't think that's an improvement.

At this stage, it'd probably take an actual literal civil war for Trump's approval rating to take a big dive, particularly with his key demographics. I doubt there's official statistics on this (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), but I'd be surprised if the hardcore militia types weren't a minority even among his base - most of his well-off supporters strike me as NIMBYs who want Trump to wield the power of the state to sweep the unpleasant issues and populations away from their sight - having an actual war break out in their backyard would utterly shatter that sense of security.

Obviously I don't think this will actually happen, nor do I want it to - I'm just trying to highlight how difficult it would be to get the needle to move at this stage. After four years, I've realized that Trump's approval is pretty much set in stone now, barring some extraordinary crisis that can somehow top COVID. I'm just grateful that it's been consistently in the negative for his run in total, which I believe is a first for a president. :V

A pessimistic thing to ask, but... would it really matter who becomes the next POTUSOA?

I mean, it's looks like it's going to be difficult for the USA to recover after all of this, isn't it?

It absolutely matters who becomes next POTUS. If Trump wins again he gets to nominate another SC Justice (bringing the conservative majority to 7) and possibly one more (bringing it to 8), which will have an impact for generations. He can start more trade wars with allies, dismantle more of the US government and cause even worse harm that might be impossible to fix.

Being charitable and assuming they meant who's gonna be the POTUS besides Trump: yes, because not every candidate is equipped to deal with the mess Trump left behind.

For all some folks on Twitter scream that Biden is a segregionist rapist, the plain truth is that he is showing himself to be far more ambitious than most, if not everyone, gave him credit for, and thus far seems like he might make a lot of those visions real.

I don't think he would get as much done as Warren would, but certainly more than Bernie, who the more time passes the more I see as basically being little more than a lot of hot air.

It is hard to imagine any of the crop of Democratic candidates during the primary campaign not being orders of magnitude better than Trump. That said, it's such a low bar to be "better than Trump" that it's entirely reasonable to want more. Biden is far from the worst pick and his advantages — a laid-back, folksy image; riding the coattails of a very popular President (Obama); being largely inoffensive; being willing to compromise and listen to advice — make him pretty darn good.

I'd obviously have liked a woman, a minority, or both, but Biden's a safe pick for people who don't want to go that far back in the opposite direction. His VP pick, Kamala Harris, nails those demographics and puts it on the record that Biden is going to listen to women and minorities. This has all the makings of a glorious ticket.

When it comes to the criticisms of both Biden and Harris, remember as noted previously that the attack dogs of the right and the center-right have been writing up hit pieces on every possible Democratic candidate. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a Bloomberg/Yang ticket; they'd have found something to attack. You should not measure people by their haters, but by their supporters.

@asiacatdogblue I mean, if Joe succeeds, then...for one we'll have a president who won't have a church tear-gassed so that he can have a photo-op with it, and who isn't a pawn of Russia.

Now, I don't agree with Biden on everything (I'm generally to the right of the Democratic party), but he's exactly what we need right now: A level-headed guy who sees the threat of radical trouble-makers like Trump and who has the will to give 'em the boot.

She's just an awful, awful person.

The candidate, Marjorie Taylor Greene, suggested that Muslims do not belong in government; thinks black people "are held slaves to the Democratic Party"; called George Soros, a Jewish Democratic megadonor, a Nazi; and said she would feel "proud" to see a Confederate monument if she were black because it symbolizes progress made since the Civil War.

What amazes me is how little Republican leadership cared whether she won or not. Ted Howze lost the support of the local and national GOP after his racist videos came out. Randy Feenstra beat Steve King after King lost institutional support for his "white nationalism" comments. And yet the GOP response to 'Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene' was a collective shrug.
